According to the Rough Guide Travel Hot List for 2013, Margate in Kent is one of the top 10 destinations in the world, yet at first glance many might think its best days are behind it.

Danielle Peck has been documenting the town as part of her MA in photojournalism and documentary photography at the London College of Communication.

The town is now home to the Turner Contemporary art gallery, and the amusement park, Dreamland, once home to Europe's largest big wheel, is to be restored, with plans to re-open in 2015.

Peck's pictures go behind the seafront and explore the life of both residents and tourists, seen here at Marina Cafe.

Peck says: "I discovered a town in tension with its past, present and future. Wrapped in a thick blanket of nostalgia, Margate is battling to shed its negative image of a social dumping ground and a broken-down seaside resort."

"In Dreamland I hope to tell a story that is at once true to Margate’s problems and respectful of the town and its dreams of recovery."

The centre of town is dominated by Arlignton House, a block containing 142 flats built in 1963.
