In pictures: World Press Photo Awards 2014

US photographer John Stanmeyer has won this year's World Press Photo award for his picture of African migrants on the shore of Djibouti city. It shows them raising their phones in an attempt to capture an inexpensive signal from neighbouring Somalia. Stanmeyer is a founder member of the VII photo agency.
This picture of a group of blind albino boys in their boarding room at the Vivekananda Mission School for the Blind in West Bengal was taken by Brent Stirton, a South African photographer working for Reportage by Getty Images. It was awarded first prize in the Staged Portraits Single category.
Julius Schrank, a German photographer working for De Volkskrant, won first prize in the Daily Life Single category with this picture of Kachin Independence Army fighters at a funeral of one of their commanders who died the day before in Burma.
New York Times photographer Tyler Hicks came second in the Spot News Stories category. His series of pictures include this one of a woman and children hiding when militants stormed the Westgate shopping centre in Nairobi, Kenya. The women and children shown here escaped unharmed.
First place in the Observed Portraits Single category was awarded to Associated Press photographer Markus Schreiber. His picture shows a woman reacting with disappointment after finding out that access to former South African President Nelson Mandela had ended on the third and final day of his lying in state in Pretoria.
Denis Dailleux, a French photographer working for Agence Vu, won second prize in the Staged Portraits Stories category. This is one of his entries and shows Ali, a young Egyptian bodybuilder, posing with his mother in Cairo.
National Geographic photographer Steve Winter won the first prize in the Nature section with his series of pictures which includes this one of a cougar walking a trail in Los Angeles' Griffith Park. It was taken by a camera trap.
Goran Tomasevic, a Serbian photographer working for Reuters, won the first prize Spot News Stories category with his series of pictures from Syria. This picture shows Syrian rebel fighters taking cover amid flying debris and shrapnel after being hit by a tank shell in the Ain Tarma area of Damascus.
William Daniels, a French photographer working for Panos Pictures was on assignment for Time to cover the crisis in the Central African Republic when he took this photograph of demonstrators gathering on the streets of Bangui. It is one of a series that came second in the General News Stories section.
Quinn Rooney, an Australian photographer working for Getty Images, won the third prize Sports Action Stories category with his series of pictures which includes this one of Daniel Arnamnart at the Australian Swimming Championships in Adelaide, Australia
This frame showing survivors of typhoon Haiyan marching during a religious procession in Tolosa, Philippines, won French photographer Phillipe Lopez of Agence France Press first place in the Spot News Single category.
This picture of temporary accommodation for Syrian refugees in the Bulgarian capital Sofia was taken by Alessandro Penso, an Italian photographer working for OnOff Picture, and won first place in the General News Single category.
