Armed police moved in to secure the Canadian parliament in Ottawa soon after reports of shots being fired outside and inside the building

A gunman reportedly entered parliament after shooting at a soldier on guard at the National War Memorial

Police tried to surround the suspect, who was said to be carrying a large rifle, and there was a shootout in parliament

In the Conservative Party caucus room, shown shortly after gunshots were heard, MPs and staff barricaded the door

Shortly after the exchange of fire in parliament, more heavily armed police arrived in the area and warned of other possible gunmen on rooftops

Police also deployed a bomb disposal robot close to the parliament building after fears the gunman may have been carrying explosives

A lockdown was declared, with police telling those in the area to stay where they were, lock doors and keep away from windows

Police refused to say whether there was more than one gunman involved in Wednesday's shootings and said the situation was "dynamic and unfolding"
