Sony World Photography Awards: 2015 shortlist

The shortlist of finalists for the 2015 Sony World Photography Awards has been announced and includes a wide range of photographic styles and subjects including this shot of the character Bujang Ganong jumping through a circle of fire by Aprison-Aprison. Taken in Indonesia, the photo is selected for the Open Arts and Culture category award.

This year's competition attracted a record number of entries, more than 170,000 from 171 countries. Submissions are judged in 13 Professional, 10 Open and three Youth categories. Dougie Wallace was selected in Professional Portraiture for his comparative study of Glasgow and the borough of Kensington and Chelsea in London.

Daesung Lee was shortlisted in the Conceptual, Professional Competition for Futuristic Archaeology, a project which looks at desertification in Mongolia.

Three cute frogs struggle to hang on to a branch in Harfian Herdi's shot, submitted in the Open Nature and Wildlife category.

Gina Nero from Australia was shortlisted in the Open, Architecture competition. She said: "Miracle Mile is my first photograph taken after relocating to Los Angeles from New York."

Lidos of England: Lost and Found, a project by Jonathan Syer including this shot of Tooting Bec Lido in London, was submitted for the Professional, Campaign award.

Jonathan Yeap Chin Tiong, from Singapore, captured a synchronised swimming team for the Professional, Sports category.

Animal Behaviour by Kimmo Metsaranta from Finland is a series of constructed still life images using cats.

Sabine Lewandowski's project, submitted for the Professional, People category, focuses on the lives of people born with Down's syndrome.

An old shepherd is caught in a snow storm in the Gilan countryside of north Iran by Saeed Barikani, whose photograph is shortlisted for the Open, Smile award.

The overall winner will be announced on 23 April 2015. The winning and shortlisted images will go on show at Somerset House, London from 24 April – 10 May. (Joseph Makeni, Kenya, Shortlist, Smile, Open, 2015 Sony World Photography Awards)
