Somme marked by uniformed men across UK with #wearehere

Volunteers have been taking part in a commemorative project by National Theatre head Rufus Norris and artist Jeremy Deller to mark the centenary of the start of the Battle of the Somme.
Photos of the project spread across social media using the #wearehere, external hashtag.
Newcastle upon Tyne

Near the Monument in Newcastle, Mandy Charlton says "with all that is happening right now, this really puts things into perspective."

The uniformed men have been handing out cards to people who ask them what is happening. Each card details a soldier killed on the first day of the battle.

Salisbury

Barbara Leatham, external has been capturing events in Salisbury and says that it's "incredible how many people have been touched by the #Somme100 Remembrance scenes".
