Singer Rihanna was among the invited guests at the Met Gala, the annual benefit event for the museum's Costume Institute, wearing a dramatic Comme des Garcons creation.

This year's event honoured Comme des Garcons' designer Rei Kawakubo. Reality star Kim Kardashian West chose not to stick to the theme, wearing a white dress by Vivienne Westwood.

American-Egyptian actor Rami Malek arrived at the star-studded event in a daring, red Dior suit.

Pop singer Katy Perry, co-chair of the ball, wore a red-tulle dress with a veil and the word "witness" across her forehead. She surprised some by wearing Galliano, not Comme des Garcons.

Kylie Jenner (right) poses here with Donatella Versace. Kylie is wearing - you guessed it - Versace.

American Horror Story actress Sarah Paulson couldn't hide being star struck when Madonna walked the red carpet in front of her. To be honest, we'd have the same reaction.

Actress Ruby Rose rocked up to her first Met Ball wearing a Burberry creation.

Nicki Minaj wore a custom H&M creation, reflecting the Japanese designer's eccentric style. According to Vogue, her kobi belt featured the face of Rei Kawakubo.

British star Rita Ora made an entrance in a custom-made Marchesa gown.

Model Cara Delevingne caused a stir with a radical new hairstyle - spray-on bejewelled silver. Cara shaved her head recently for her latest role in romantic drama Once in a Year, in which she plays a cancer patient.

Jaden Smith also stars in the film opposite Delevigne as her boyfriend - he shaved his hair for his role, too, and brought along his chopped locks as his "date".

Serena Williams wore an emerald green halter-neck dress. The tennis star announced her pregnancy on Snapchat recently.

Selena Gomez and singer The Weeknd appeared on the red carpet together for the first time.
