A massive car bomb has exploded in the Afghan capital Kabul, killing and injuring dozens of people.

The bomb went off near Kabul's fortified diplomatic area, damaging several embassies.

The explosion happened during the morning rush hour.

Buildings were flattened in the attack, which one eyewitness said "felt like an earthquake".

Civilians bore the brunt of the casualties.

The injured - many of them in the state of shock - were taken to local hospitals.

The bombing, one of the deadliest in Kabul in recent years, came at the start of the holy month of Ramadan.

No group has so far claimed the attack.
