Rioters clash with police while trying to enter the US Capitol building, in Washington, DC. Supporters of President Donald Trump swarmed the building as lawmakers met to confirm President-elect Joe Biden's poll win. Five people have died in connection with the incidents, including Brian Sicknick, an officer with the US Capitol Police.

In a TV address, President-elect Joe Biden described the violence as "one of the darkest days in the history of our nation" and blamed President Trump for stoking violence. He added it was "totally unacceptable" that police had shown more leniency than in Black Lives Matter protests last year.
