    US Steel's Clairton Coke Works is located on the edge of Clairton, by the Monongahela River, roughly 15 miles (24km) from Pittsburgh.

    The plant is an important part of Clairton's economy, employing almost 1,300 people.

    Prior to that press conference, the sister of a worker at the Clairton plant told local media she was searching for information about her brother's whereabouts.

    Trisha Quinn said she had contacted the site and several local hospitals but could not get firm answers about his condition. She heard from one person, who was not an official, that he was taken out on a stretcher.

    "They need communication with these families," she said.

    "It's heart-breaking. He has three kids that are messaging me every two minutes and we need answers - we need them now, even if it's not what we want to hear."

    Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato advises residents within one mile (1.6km) of the plant to remain indoors "out of an abundance of caution", echoing similar advice issued by officials earlier.

    She says they should close all doors and windows and "avoid activities that draw in outside air - such as exhaust fans".

    Innamorato adds that the county's health department has not detected a rise in sulphur dioxide above federal standards.

    Black smoke from the steel plant alerted Clairton resident Deanna Forkey to the explosion, she says.

    "I saw the black smoke and at that point, I realised there was an explosion over there; it wasn't normal," Forkey tells reporters.

    She says her daughter also called to tell her the explosion shook their house, which is minutes away from the steel plant.

    "My prayers are with all: the family, the people that are impacted."

    We can bring you comments from Clairton Mayor Richard Lattanzi, who spoke to CBS News a short while ago outside the US Steel Clairton plant.

    Lattanzi, a former steelworker himself at a different plant, says "the [plant] is such a big part of Clairton".

    He continues: "For anyone that works... you need to go home healthy, and some people are not going to see the same husband or son or somebody that's working the mill.

    "It's just a sad day for Clairton."

    The Allegheny County Health Department has told people who live close to the steel plant to keep their windows closed, with smoke billowing from the site after the explosion.

    Local officials say: "Out of an abundance of caution, residents within one mile of the plant are advised to remain indoors, close all windows and doors, set HVAC systems to recirculate, and avoid activities that draw in outside air, such as using exhaust fans."

    They say unsafe levels of air pollution have not been detected at this stage, and that further updates will be issued as more information becomes available.

    Dozens of people have been injured in what authorities have described as a mass casualty incident.

    At least 15 ambulances are at the scene, Allegheny County Emergency Services' Kasey Reigner told CBS News.
