    A spokesperson for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed the Harbour Parade has now reopened and police are no longer at the scene.

    Our reporters outside West Quay have also confirmed firefighters are no longer there as the blaze has been extinguished.

    The truck fire was accidental, firefighters have confirmed.

    In their latest update, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service say the scene has now been handed over to police.

    In a statement, the service explained the vehicle contained "cylinders that exploded".

    It added: "The fire completely destroyed the vehicle and caused heat and smoke damage to the entrance of the West Quay car park.

    "Ventilation fans were deployed to clear the remaining smoke. We would like to thank everyone for their patience and cooperation during this incident."

    The BBC understands the workmen were not in the vehicle at the time of this morning's fire and subsequent explosion.

    It is believed they were painting road markings nearby when the incident happened.

    The company they work for, Acculine, previously told us it was unsure of the cause, but were considering an issue with a gas canister.

    Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has posted an update explaining the fire is now out.

    A statement said: "There remains smoke in the area and crews are currently working to clear this.

    "We expect to have a presence on site for some time until the incident is fully resolved.

    "The road closure remains in place. We thank everyone for their patience while we deal with this matter."

    Delivery rider Sheikh Emad Uddin Billal was on his way along Harbour Parade to pick up an order when he came across the unfolding incident.

    "I noticed a car (sic) on fire with a crowd of people watching. Then I stopped my moped and made a video.

    "Suddenly the explosion happened – nobody knew it was going to happen.

    "It was scary. As I made the video, one guy went to the van and everyone shouted for him to come back. He came back and at that time the explosion happened."

    Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are asking members of the public to stay away from the scene.

    A spokesperson said: "Crews from St Mary’s, Redbridge and Hightown are currently in attendance at a vehicle fire following reports of smoke and flames at the back of Westquay, Southampton at just after 09:30 GMT this morning.

    "People are asked to avoid the area while emergency services deal with the incident. Harbour Parade is closed in both directions."

    A number of emergency services vehicles – ambulance, police and fire - are here.

    It looks like a working truck has caught fire.

    Firefighters are putting the fire out with hoses at the moment. The vehicle looks like it has been completely burnt, parts are black, there is no top any more - you can just see the inside.

    I can hear the fire alarm from inside West Quay - the whole of the shopping centre has been evacuated.

    It looks like hundreds of people have been evacuated from the shopping centre and are just waiting to see what happens next.

    BBC cameraman Marcus Gaines is at the scene and said there was "jet-black smoke" shortly after a "pounding explosion".

    He explained: "A thick plume of acrid smoke billowed up into the blue sky. You could tell immediately this wasn’t good.

    "The sound of sirens echoed around and within five minutes the smoke had passed."
