Summary

  • Canaries' head coach Liam Manning, majority shareholder Mark Attanasio, sporting director Ben Knapper and executive director Zoe Webber were answering questions at Carrow Road.

  • Attanasio flew in from the USA for the Q&A and made a very clear point: "One of the promises I made to Delia and Michael is that we would open our chequebook."

  • The future of star striker Josh Sargent was discussed, with Knapper admitting there is "big interest" in the US ace.

  • Manning says he is "super excited" about the addition of Denmark international attacker Mathias Kvistgaarden.

  1. And that's your lot... with an Oasis encorepublished at 20:06 British Summer Time 15 July

Manning is asked, what would he choose if he was in charge of pre-match music in the changing room?

He replies: "I'm actually going to see Oasis soon, so something like that."

Attanasio says his sons are going as well and that's the live stream ending on a light-hearted note, plenty of ground covered.

Plenty of positivity in the room but then, as we well know, it's easy to be positive in pre-season before the competitive stuff starts (as Thorup and Knapper found out last season on the opening day at newly-promoted Oxford).

Clear that there's still more transfer activity to come too. I suspect the name Josh Sargent will be written about... a lot.

Thanks so much for following with us this evening. The event can be watched back in full in the video above and we'll stick it out in audio form on the usual Scrimmage podcast feed too.

  2. Derby pressurepublished at 20:00 British Summer Time 15 July

The hour has flown past. We're getting into the final questions and a big one - how will City maintain the club's proud derby record against Ipswich - 16 years undefeated, in case you've forgotten...

Manning says it will be important for lads who are new to the club, especially those from overseas, for it to be made clear, saying he will be "giving them an appreciation and an understanding of the importance of the game in the lead up to it."

He adds that it is his job to ensure they are "fired up" on the day to get out there and "give it a right go".

Portman Road awaits in early October.

  3. This seasonpublished at 19:58 British Summer Time 15 July

Chris Reeve has a burning question and it's about the word transition.

He asks: "Liam, what do you you hope, believe and expect from this season?"

Manning ponders before replying: "It's quite clear the aim is to get to the Premier League but quite clear that many other teams in the league trying to do the same. Do I believe in the group we've got and the people behind the scenes? The answer for me was 'yes' and hopefully we can add to that."

He finishes by saying that "I'm getting the lads ready to win on day-one", which is kind of obvious for a head coach to state but still important to hear.

Webber adds she always thinks the club should be aiming to be in the top six and she doesn't think there was any lack of clarity about that last season.

  4. Stadium expansion?published at 19:53 British Summer Time 15 July

Next up is a question about Carrow Road expansion. Zoe Webber acknowledges some images of plans did leak online but then it's the usual club answer about it being very expensive.

Webber: "It's very much something we're looking at but it's about feasibility."

Attanasio chips in and says he promised Delia the name Carrow Road would remain, which gets a big cheer from the audience.

He talks about "optimising the fan experience" and ensuring the stadium is "state of the art" in terms of its facilities. So nothing new really on that situation.

  5. Sargentpublished at 19:50 British Summer Time 15 July

After a bit of chat about Borja Sainz's sale to Porto, attention turns to whether Josh Sargent will stay.

    So, is he leaving?

Knapper: "We don't know at this point. There is big interest in the player, so as of now, no. As always with things it has to work for everyone, Josh is a player that is always going to command interest. Clubs in the big five leagues have expressed interest."

He also says that if an offensive player were to leave, they will be looking to replace them. So Kvistgaarden is not necessarily a pre-bought replacement.

Attanasio joins in and says he has plenty of experience in baseball of losing the team's top players. Says Knapper has made clear to him that Sargent is "the best striker in the Championship".

  6. Big questions from the floor...published at 19:47 British Summer Time 15 July

Great question from a lad called Harry. He asks why Manning picked City over Bristol.

"I've come back here because of the work and the ambition of the club. I also want to do things properly by developing staff and players as well. It ticked all the boxes for me in terms of the next steps of my career."

Next question to Knapper... How much can Manning spend?

The upbeat Sporting Director says: "One of the exciting things about where we're at with Mark and the ownership is their resource. It sounds crude but it allows us to be more proactive and aggressive in the market. We don't have to sell a player to do something and that makes my job a lot easier."

  7. Flashback to 1993published at 19:40 British Summer Time 15 July

Manning is talking about being a season ticket holder when he was younger and recalling a 3-1 defeat to Manchester United in 1993. He reveals his family live in Poringland now and talks about former City coach Steve Foley being one of his mentors (from their time at Ipswich, ahem...)

Next question is about how Knapper manager to sign Kvistgaarden. He remains diplomatic and says they knew nothing about the release clause in his Brondby contract and claims they were just bidding for a player, he says with a smile.

  8. Spending power?published at 19:34 British Summer Time 15 July

Here's the big quote of the night... so far, from majority shareholder Mark Attanasio, who fronts the FB Norfolk Holdings group.

"One of the promises I made to Delia and Michael is that we would open our chequebook. The goal is to get back to the Premier League."

He then goes on to talk about how important developing young talent is, citing his US baseball team doing well with youth.

  9. Playing stylepublished at 19:30 British Summer Time 15 July

Some questions from the floor now with a bit of chat about recruitment and selling before buying, Knapper essentially says that varies on individual situations.

Next it's about the club's playing ethos and whether that is led by him or the head coach.

"As we can see with the previous coach (Johannes Hoff Thorup) as well, there is a consistency of style there. We're not going to kick the ball long and have 25% of possession. It's set at club level but for the coach to put their own spin on it."

  10. Artificial intelligence?published at 19:24 British Summer Time 15 July

Sounds like it's been a busy day for Attanasio, flying in from the US today, rushed up to Colney to watch some training before heading to the main attraction - the summer Scrimmage special.

Phil asks Zoe Webber if AI is having an impact at the club...

Webber: "It's definitely a project that we're working on. So many facets to it. On the playing side a lot of clubs bringing it into their analytics. It can create efficiencies."

Knapper adds data has become huge in recruitment terms, so "we're doing a lot of work on that" and linking up with Attanasio's baseball team the Milwaukee Brewers on those areas.

  11. Kvistgaarden's arrivalpublished at 19:19 British Summer Time 15 July

Manning has been talking about new signing Mathias Kvistgaarden and knows he will have to adjust to life in the Championship.

"Super excited about him, a great indicator of the level that we're able to attract."

Knapper joins in and says Manning told him about his hopes to sign him - warning him "Ben, if you're any good, you'll sign him."

  12. First questionpublished at 19:12 British Summer Time 15 July

Manning is asked about how pre-season is going

The new boss says his players have been back for two weeks but some came back at different times due to internationals, so he only met Jose Corboda for the first time today.

"Plenty of sun tan lotion, plenty of fluids but we're lucky we have a top facility," he tells the team.

  13. And we're offpublished at 19:10 British Summer Time 15 July

Chris, Rob and Phil have taken to the stage and the crowd of more than 100 are now welcoming the guests of honour.

Zoe Webber, Ben Knapper, Mark Attanasio and Liam Manning join them on the high stools with the Carrow Road pitch behind them.

  15. The scene is set...published at 18:55 British Summer Time 15 July

Chris Reeve, Rob Butler and Phil Daley are at Carrow Road and getting set up for tonight's event with our tech crew.

City only have one match lined up to play at their stadium during pre-season, against Dutch top-flight side NAC Breda on Saturday 2 August.

Manning will take centre stage but there is plenty to be discussed tonight, with majority shareholder Mark Attanasio (pictured) flying in from the US to chat with City fans at Carrow Road.

The group the American fronts, FB Norfolk Holdings, assumed an 85% shareholding in the club in March after a gradual introduction to the club's top table in recent years.

Attanasio will be alongside sporting director Ben Knapper, who goes into his second full season at the helm of City's football department with a second head coach, having decided to dismiss Johannes Hoff Thorup towards the end of last season's nosedive towards mid-table.

Also on hand to provide updates about off-field and business matters will be executive director Zoe Webber, who sits on the club's board of directors and is also one of three Championship representatives on the EFL board.

City's new head coach will celebrate his 40th birthday next month but already has plenty of experience under his belt.

He has taken charge of more than 200 games since his first job as the main man, taking over at Belgian club Lommel in 2020.

Spells in the EFL with MK Dons and Oxford followed and the Norwich-born former Canaries season ticket-holder joined having led Bristol City to the Championship play-offs last season.

Can he find the top six again with a renewed Norwich squad? We'll find out where he's at with the revamp tonight.

Norwich City's pre-season kicked off with a 3-1 friendly win over Northampton Town at the weekend amid a busy start to the transfer window. So, does new head coach Liam Manning believe a promotion push could be possible?

We'll be asking the man himself in a summer special Scrimmage Q&A at Carrow Road, which you can watch live on this page.

If you can't watch it live, we've got you covered. As well as live updates of the evening's key lines, you'll be able to watch it all back in full.

There have been no big-name departures from the BBC Radio Norfolk squad either, so we'll have our all-star line-up of Rob Butler, Phil Daley and Chris Reeve leading the line from 19:00 BST.
