    Reactions to the attack have begun being shared by world leaders and political figures.

    French President Emmanuel Macron writes on X that France condemns the attack, extending his condolences to those affected.

    "The spiral of violence must come to an end. Only a political solution will bring back peace and stability for all in the region," he adds.

    German foreign minister Johann Wadephul writes that he is "deeply shocked" by the incident, and wishes those injured a "speedy recovery".

    The US ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, says he is "horrified" by the attack and adds: "We stand with Israel against this savagery."

    And the United Arab Emirates has posted a statement, condemning the attack "In the strongest terms".

    It's foreign ministry writes that it reaffirms their "permanent rejection of all forms of violence".

    The head of the Palestinian Authority - which governs parts of the West Bank not under full Israeli control - has issued a statement condemning "any targeting of Palestinian and Israeli citizens".

    Mahmoud Abbas says he denounces "all forms of violence and terrorism, regardless of their source".

    He adds that the recognition of a Palestinian state is the core to ending the "cycle of violence" in the region.

    As we reported earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been conducting a situation assessment with security officials.

    Posting an update about this meeting on X, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) says that - in the aftermath of the attack in Jerusalem - it is focusing on the "encirclement" of the villages from which the suspected attackers originated.

    This echoes a statement that Netanyahu gave at the scene a few hours ago.

    Israeli President Isaac Herzog says it is a "painful and difficult morning", following the shooting in Jerusalem.

    In a statement on X, he writes that "innocent citizens, children and adults, were murdered and injured in cold blood on a bus in the heart of a city".

    He adds the attack "reminds us time and again that we are fighting absolute evil" and the "world must understand what we are facing".

    "The people of Israel are strong. The people of Israel live," he writes.

    Daniel Katzenstein, a first-responder with United Hatzalah, arrived shortly after the attack and treated one of the bus drivers at the scene.

    "His name was Mohammed," Daniel tells me.

    "He also ran to help. This is not a battle of Islam versus Judaism, this is a battle between the people who wish to do harm, and the people who want to live life."

    A little earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke to members of the press in Hebrew at the scene of the shooting.

    He said that authorities are currently "pursuing and surrounding" the villages where the attackers came from.

    Netanyahu sent his condolences to the victims' families and said he hopes for a quick recovery for the wounded.

    Calling it a "war on several fronts", Netanyahu said that Israel has thwarted hundreds of attacks this year, but were not able to this morning.

    As we've been reporting, a shooting attack in Jerusalem this morning has killed at least six people, according to the country's foreign minister, and injured a dozen more.

    It has been reported that two gunmen were involved - with Israeli police saying they have been "neutralised".

    No group has claimed it has carried out the attack - but Hamas has issued a statement saying "we commend" the actions of the attackers, calling it a "natural response" to Israel's military activity in Gaza.

    Hamas launched an attack on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage.

    In response, the Israeli military launched a campaign in Gaza. At least 64,522 people have been killed in Israeli attacks on the Strip since then, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry - which has also been reporting on additional deaths from malnutrition in recent weeks.

    The number of people killed in the Jerusalem shooting has risen to six, Israel's foreign minister Gideon Saar says.

    Speaking during a press conference in Budapest, he says "many are injured" including a pregnant woman.

    It appears to be one of those hit by bullets, and has what looks like three bullet holes in the windscreen.

    Meanwhile both the Israeli police and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have issued statements following the shooting.

    Israeli police say that the attack occurred at 10:15 local time (08:15 BST), when two people opened fire at people waiting at a bus stop near Ramot Junction.

    "A soldier and several civilians at the bus stop engaged the attackers and returned fire," it adds, killing both of the suspects.

    Officers were sent to the scene and evacuated the injured alongside medical teams and recovered weapons - including ammunition and a knife - used by the attackers, it continues.

    Meanwhile, the IDF says it has sent soldiers to the area and are searching there for suspects.

    "Simultaneously, IDF soldiers are currently encircling several areas on the outskirts of Ramallah to thwart terrorism and strengthen the defence effort," it adds. Ramallah is in the occupied West Bank.

    Magen David Adom, Israel's ambulance service, says that five people have been killed in the shooting - including a 50-year-old man and three men in their 30s.

    A woman in her 50s was taken to hospital in a critical condition, but later pronounced dead, it says.

    Twelve people have been injured, it adds, including seven in a serious condition with gunshot wounds.

    People, dressed in black, can be seen running across the Golda Me'ir Boulevard road that is at standstill, with lots of cars stopped behind the people.

    At least five people have been killed and 12 others wounded in a shooting attack in Jerusalem, Israel’s Magen David Adom ambulance service says.

    Paramedics have identified the dead as one man and one woman in their 50s, and three men in their 30s.

    Israel's Channel 12 TV reports that the gunmen boarded a bus and opened fire before a soldier shot them. There has been no immediate claim from any armed groups.

    Israeli police say the attack took place at Ramot Junction - which is located on the north-western outskirts of the city. It says that "two terrorists were neutralised".
