Much of today’s work so far has been about authenticating video to help the BBC’s reporting on three significant global stories.

    We’ve verified:

We’re handing over to the late team now who'll monitor developments in Ukraine and Gaza as well as looking into reported explosions in Iran.

Tomorrow we expect to get more detail on the UK-France migration deal which was announced in the last half-hour and will be pouring over the agreement to understand what it means.

Do check out the BBC Verify section of the BBC News website for more of our fact-checks, videos and explainers.

  3. Watch: Has the Trump administration backtracked on releasing the Epstein ‘client list’?published at 16:45 British Summer Time 10 July

    Jake Horton
    BBC Verify senior journalist

During the campaign for the US presidency last year, Donald Trump promised to release files from the investigation into the sex offender and disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.

A review of the material began once Trump entered the White House - but this week an FBI and Department of Justice statement confirmed that exercise had finished and no further evidence would be released.

The statement added that Epstein killed himself in prison in 2019 and the review found no "incriminating list" of clients and "no credible evidence" that he blackmailed prominent individuals.

BBC Verify’s Jake Horton has been looking into what some members of the Trump administration have said about the supposed “client list” in the past.

We have verified multiple videos showing a deadly strike at Deir al-Balah in central Gaza early this morning which local reports say killed at least 15 people including eight children and two women. People queueing for nutritional supplements were among the dead, according to Gaza’s al-Aqsa Martyrs hospital.

CCTV footage we have verified shows two men walking just before an explosion. A little over 10 metres (32ft) away we can see one group of women and children.

Footage filmed immediately afterwards and shared on social media shows the bodies of the two men as well as dead and badly injured women and children. Another group of casualties appear to have been as close as six metres (20ft) from the blast.

We counted at least six bloodied and motionless children and five adults in the videos, along with several others who appeared badly wounded and barely moving.

The Israel Defense Forces said it targeted a "Hamas terrorist" in the area and it "regret[ted] any harm to uninvolved individuals" adding that the incident was "under review".

We verified and geolocated the footage by identifying distinctive background features - such as tree patterns and building shapes - and confirmed the timing by analysing the angle of shadows in the CCTV video.

Reverse image searches confirmed the videos were posted recently. We were able to link multiple clips to the same incident by matching details such as the clothing worn by the children who were killed.

  5. Five questions about the UK-France ‘one in, one out’ migrants dealpublished at 15:28 British Summer Time 10 July

    Tom Edgington
    BBC Verify senior journalist

The expected “one in, one out” deal between the British and French governments would potentially allow the UK to send illegal migrants back to France.

We’ll be watching the announcement - due at around 15:30 BST - and hope to get answers to some of the outstanding questions we have about how the scheme might work and its likely effectiveness:

    • How many people will the scheme apply to? Reports suggest it could be 50 a week
    • When will it begin and could it be expanded?
    • Will the number be high enough to act as meaningful deterrent?
    • Will the UK only accept those with family ties or will there be other categories?
    • What would stop returned migrants from simply attempting to cross again?

Once the full details are released, we’ll be speaking to various experts to get their assessments of the scheme.

Updated 15:45: We're hearing that the Downing Street news conference with Starmer and Macron is running late.

  6. Russia has launched hundreds of drones and missiles at Ukraine in recent weeks - military datapublished at 14:58 British Summer Time 10 July

Graphic showing the number of Russian drones and missiles launched at Ukraine from 1 June to 10 July 2025

We’ve been reporting on last night’s Russian strikes on Kyiv, which came a day after Moscow launched a record 728 drones and 13 cruise or ballistic missiles at cities across the country, according to Ukrainian military data.

We’ve plotted the data since 1 June in a graph that shows Russia has been able to consistently attack Ukraine with hundreds of drones in recent weeks.

Last night was no different. The Ukraine Air Force said 415 drones and missiles were launchedOf which:

    • 397 were drones
    • The remainder were missiles
    • 178 were shot down by Ukraine
    • 204 were either lost or suppressed by electronic warfare

The Ukraine Air Force said decoy drones are regularly being used by Russia in order to overwhelm its air defence system.

According to the Institute for the Study of War, Russian forces have equipped their decoy long-range drones with warheads and have modified their strike drones with warheads in order to “inflict a wide spread of damage… which disproportionately affects civilian areas”.

  7. Only one GHF site currently open for aid distribution in Gazapublished at 14:24 British Summer Time 10 July

    Alex Murray
    BBC Verify journalist

The Israel and US-backed organisation responsible for distributing aid in Gaza has said there’s "no distribution” at its Gaza Valley, external site this week and Khan Younis would also be closed from Wednesday for maintenance and renovation work, external.

These announcements come from the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation’s (GHF) Facebook page, where Gazans find out information about where aid will be available on a daily basis.

Another GHF site - SDS1 - in the Tel al-Sultan area near Rafah has not operated since mid-June. At the end of the month the Israel Defense Forces said it had decided to close the hub there and establish a new one nearby.

That leaves just one site, SDS 2 - known as “Saudi Neighbourhood” - currently operating for aid distribution.

On a typical day, 10,368 boxes or 665,280 meals are distributed at that site, according to data from GHF’s daily operational updates.

A joint statement from some of the world's biggest charities and NGOs argues the GHF is violating all norms of humanitarian work and should be shut down, with the UN secretary general calling their operations “inherently unsafe.”

The GHF has defended its operations in Gaza. A spokesperson said: “GHF is here to help, and we remain committed to our work to ensure that Gazans have reliable aid during a time when no other aid groups are present on the ground delivering food - with nearly 68 million meals distributed to date and counting.”

  8. Too early to see impact on Red Sea shipping from latest Houthi attacks, says expertpublished at 13:36 British Summer Time 10 July

Two ships have sunk after being attacked by the Houthis off the coast of Yemen this week

Maritime experts we’ve contacted say they haven’t yet observed a decline in the number of ships passing through the Red Sea despite the sinking of two commercial vessels by Yemen’s Houthi fighters earlier this week.

However, the impact of the latest wave of attacks on shipping could take several days to show up on tracking data.

In the wake of the first round of attacks on shipping by Houthi fighters in November 2023, many companies re-routed their vessels around southern Africa adding 10-12 days to their journeys.

“While 60% of vessels have re-routed since the Houthi strikes first started, the volume of vessels prepared to continue transiting has remained steady throughout even the worst of the violence,” says Richard Meade, editor-in-chief of the specialist shipping data firm Lloyd’s List Intelligence.

  10. What we know about the sinking of the Eternity Cpublished at 12:02 British Summer Time 10 July

    Sherie Ryder
    BBC Verify journalist

We have been authenticating a video released by Houthi-controlled media of an attack by its fighters on the Eternity C, a Greek-operated cargo ship on Monday in the Red Sea off Yemen, which led to it sinking on Tuesday.

Bearing in mind this was shared on a known Houthi propaganda channel, we were unable to verify the radio communications audio heard. However, the images from the footage can be authenticated.

We could see that the ship featured in the clip matches photos we’ve seen of the Eternity C on the Vessel Finder , externalwebsite from 2020.

One of the frames from the video shows the ship sinking from the stern

The damage to the starboard quarter matches images we’ve seen on the vessel-tracking provider, Lloyd’s List.

We also carried out an additional check using Synth ID which found no evidence that the footage had been manipulated or generated using artificial intelligence.

Reverse image searches of the video clip brought up no prior copies so we know the footage is current.

We’ll be following the UK-France summit all day today and listening out for a possible deal on immigration returns.

So far this year, the number of small boat migrants arriving in the UK has reached record levels - and most of them go on to claim asylum.

France has claimed that one factor attracting them is the ability to "work without papers" in the UK.In this article, we looked at the evidence for this and other "pull factors" cited as reasons for asylum seekers to choose the UK as a destination.

One recent study by the European Parliament suggested the size of the UK's informal economy was about 11% of the total economy in 2022, external. This was actually lower than their estimate for France's at 14% and lower than the average of 31 European countries, which was 17%.

A frame grabbed from Instagram showing smoke over the Kyiv skyline

I’ve verified new footage posted on Instagram showing Kyiv’s skyline filled with smoke this morning.

Three bridges in the video helped me identify the point of view of the person filming. As the camera pans we’re shown Kyiv’s Havansky Bridge, Podilskyi Bridge and in the distance Pivnichnyi Bridge. The curve of the river and sandy banks are also easily identifiable using online mapping tools.

Light levels in the clip suggest it was shot at dawn or dusk - but having established where the footage was filmed we can see sun is in the east and so the video is from the early morning.

Nasa’s Firms satellite system - which detects heat sources on the ground - has picked up readings in parts of Kyiv today. One of them matches the area of the smoke plume in the video - north of Havansky Bridge.

According to a Kyiv resident we’ve spoken to, the attack lasted hours. President Volodymyr Zelensky said Chernihiv, Sumy, Poltava, Kirovohrad and Kharkiv regions were also attacked.

  14. Analysing video after another wave of Russian strikes on Ukrainepublished at 09:49 British Summer Time 10 July

    Emma Pengelly and Fridon Kiria
    BBC Verify and BBC Monitoring

We’ve been verifying video being posted online from Ukraine following an overnight Russian attack involving around 400 drones and 18 missiles, according to the country’s President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Ukraine’s worst hit area was Kyiv, he said, where two people were killed. He reported five other regions were hit.

We’ve verified a video filmed this morning that shows the result of one attack. It was filmed in a central district of Kyiv and shows firefighters tackling a blaze at a residential building. We can see black smoke pouring from its broken windows along with debris at street level.

We’ve also heard from a Ukrainian who lives in Kyiv. They told us the attack lasted for hours and they couldn’t sleep for the continuous sound of explosions.

Across the border, the Russian Ministry of Defence has said it “destroyed and intercepted” 14 Ukrainian drones overnight.

  15. Welcome to BBC Verify Livepublished at 09:30 British Summer Time 10 July

Hello from the team in London Broadcasting House.

We're currently gathering footage from Kyiv after another night of intense Russian bombardment. At least two people were killed in the attack, the Ukrainian interior minister has said.

We'll be feeding material that our team has verified into the BBC's reporting on the story across the day.

We're also digging into the impact on Red Sea shipping - and the potential knock-ons for global trade - of the latest attacks by Yemen's Houthi fighters which has led to the sinking of two ships in recent days.

And we're assessing the likely effects of a potential “one in, one out” deal on migration between the UK and France as Prime Minister Keir Starmer and President Emmanuel Macron meet for a summit today.
