Douglas is largest settlement on the island, and home to about 26,000 people. It’s also the main hub, with the ferry terminal in its harbour.

The city is the start and end point of the island’s famous TT motorcycle race, and the site where the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, the RNLI for short, was founded in 1824.

  6. Douglas one of eight places given city status in 2022published at 12:28 Greenwich Mean Time 20 March

City status was given to at least one place in every UK nation - and Stanley on the Falkland Islands as well as Douglas on the Isle of Man.

The other recipients were Milton Keynes, Colchester and Doncaster in England, Dunfermline in Scotland, Bangor in Northern Ireland and Wrexham in Wales.

City status is often associated with having a cathedral, university, or large population, but there are no set rules for being granted the status.

The change won’t make any immediately tangible difference, but is a marker of prestige for Douglas and the Isle of Man as a whole.

Having a city could give a boost to local communities and open up new opportunities for people who live there, the Cabinet Office says.
