In an astonishing twist, Paul Doyle has been rearraigned and has changed his pleas to guilty.

While we're waiting, let's look back at what happened in court yesterday.

Paul Doyle was asked to enter pleas to four counts that had been amended since his last appearance, which reflected new medical evidence.

He answered "not guilty" to two amended counts of causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent, one of wounding with intent and one of attempting to cause GBH with intent.

In total, he denies 31 charges including nine counts of causing GBH with intent, 17 of attempted GBH with intent and three of wounding with intent.

The charges relate to 29 people aged between six months and 77 years.

The 54-year-old cried in the dock as jurors were sworn in.

As trial judge Andrew Menary KC explained to the jury yesterday, there has been huge public interest in this case.

That is evident from the dozens of journalists who have descended on Liverpool Crown Court to cover proceedings.

Jurors have been told to keep any media reporting or commentary, both from mainstream outlets and on social medial, out of their minds.

Judge Menary urged them to focus solely on the evidence heard in the courtroom.

The trial is expected to get under way shortly, as the prosecution is expected to open their case against Mr Doyle.

Liverpool FC stormed to the Premier League title in the 2024/25 season, wrapping up the league on Sunday 28 April after thrashing Tottenham 5-1 at Anfield.

Within days, Liverpool Council announced a victory parade would take place the following month on 26 May.

Hundreds of thousands of fans took to the streets to watch an open-top bus carrying the players make its way through the city.

Shortly after the bus passed along the waterfront in Liverpool city centre, a Ford Galaxy Titanium car drove into a dense crowd of people making their way along Water Street, a double-laned one-way street lined with bars, restaurants and businesses.

More than 130 people were injured, including babies and children.

On 29 May Merseyside Police and the Crown Prosecution Service announced Paul Doyle would be charged with seven offences.

Further counts were added in later hearings at Liverpool Crown Court and Mr Doyle now faces a total of 31 charges, relating to 27 victims.

He has pleaded not guilty to 17 counts of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent, nine of causing GBH with intent and three of wounding with intent.

He has also denied one charge of dangerous driving and one of affray.

Two of the charges relate to baby boys aged six and seven months at the time.

The oldest victim injured in the attack was 77-year-old Susan Passey.

Merseyside Police announced a 53-year-old white British male from Liverpool had been taken into custody at the scene of the crash on Water Street.

That man was later identified as Paul Doyle, now aged 54, from Burghill Road in West Derby.

He is married to a local teacher and has three children

Mr Doyle is believed to be an IT professional who served in the Royal Marine Commandos in the 1990s.
