"My love, my thoughts and my prayers are with his family and friends, and the whole community of All Saints Catholic High School."

Coppard, who has police and crime commissioner responsibilities, says he is in touch with the Chief Constable of South Yorkshire Police and offered his full support.

He adds: "The vast majority of our young people don't carry knives, but one incidence of knife crime is one too many, because when we do see knife crime happen all too often the consequences are utterly devastating, as they have been today."

In the final moments of that short police update, South Yorkshire Police Assistant Chief Constable Lindsey Butterfield was asked about reports of a lockdown at the school last week.

As a reminder, the PA news agency reports that on 29 January, headteacher Sean Pender sent a message to parents, saying: "The reason for the lockdown was due to threatening behaviour between a small number of students where threats were made of physical violence."

ACC Butterfield didn't give new information, but said the report would be "reviewed".

"It's very, very early stages of the police investigation," she said.

"That is something that the investigation team will consider, but right now, we're focusing on the here and now and we will review that as the investigation progresses."

"All my thoughts are with his family and friends, and the entire community at All Saints.

"A criminal investigation will now obviously take place, but serious questions will have to be answered about how this could have happened and I will be working with the school, the police and the council to make sure they are."

  8. Anti-social behaviour a problem in the area, local sayspublished at 16:25 Greenwich Mean Time

"It [anti-social behaviour] is quite rampant in the area," he says.

"It is concerning, especially being a community centre. We provide facilities for people to pray and we have children who are afraid.

"We are very saddened to hear the news from the school."
