  3. Verified footage shows wall collapsing as Pakistan river breaches bankpublished at 16:01 British Summer Time 18 August

    BBC Verify senior journalist

We’ve been analysing new footage from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in north-west Pakistan where at least 15 more people are feared dead in fresh flash floods.

More than 300 people have been killed across Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir in the last week.

This part of Pakistan is remote and lacking in Google street view images which makes it hard to locate where the footage we’re viewing has been filmed.

One video that we verified shows part of a wall collapsing into the fast-flowing water.

We ran recency checks and understand that the video has not been uploaded to the internet before today - indicating that it shows today’s flooding.

After spending several hours trying to find the exact location of the flooding, we found the collapsed wall belongs to the Government Degree College in the Topi area of Swabi district.

We’ve matched the features of the building and surrounding structures with satellite imagery from Google Earth to confirm the exact location.

  4. How many people have been killed in the Ukraine war?published at 15:28 British Summer Time 18 August

    Shayan Sardarizadeh
    BBC Verify senior journalist

During today's talks between Trump, Zelensky and European leaders, you're likely to hear appeals from all sides to prevent any more casualties in Ukraine.

Getting an accurate, running tally of the war dead, however, is extremely difficult.

On the plane to the Alaska summit, President Trump told reporters that in the last week, “7,011 people were lost - almost all soldiers”.

“We’re going to stop, really, five, six, seven thousands - thousands of people a week being killed.”Trump may have been given this figure in a security briefing but we can’t find evidence for it.

Ukraine and Russia don’t give regular updates on casualties and both have been accused of inflating the other side’s losses.

However, several studies have attempted to estimate the number of deaths on both sides.

In June, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, external in Washington estimated that 250,000 Russian soldiers had been killed in the conflict.

It also estimated that between 60,000 to 100,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed.

The BBC’s Russian service - along with Mediazona - has analysed data from Russian cemeteries, war memorials, and obituaries.

It estimated that, as of August 2025, more than 122,000 Russian soldiers had been killed.

Taking into account the bodies of soldiers that remain on the battlefield, BBC Russian estimated the total number of Russian deaths could be in the range of 189,051 to 273,073.

  5. Verifying strikes on a third Ukrainian city todaypublished at 14:46 British Summer Time 18 August

    Richard Irvine-Brown
    BBC Verify journalist

Following strikes overnight on Kharkiv and Odesa, we’ve been looking at a daytime attack on the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, where three people have been killed and 23 injured, according to regional head Idor Federov.

Video posted online, including footage from the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, shows smoke and wreckage along the Dniprovske Highway in the north-west of the city.

It shows several single-storey shops destroyed. Other buildings have broken glass and internal damage.

From reverse-searching frames from three videos we can see they all first spread across X, Instagram and Telegram around 10:00 local time (08:00 BST) today.

The clear skies and the clothing worn by pedestrians and firefighters are consistent with the warm and sunny weather reports for the city this morning.

  6. How we’re tracking wildfires in Spainpublished at 14:07 British Summer Time 18 August

Wildfires in Spain have destroyed more than 3,430 sq km (1,320 sq miles) of land this year, according to data released today by the European Forest Fire Information System.

That’s equivalent to nearly half a million football pitches.

BBC Verify has been tracking the spread and intensity of wildfires across southern Europe this summer. One tool we’ve been using is Nasa’s Fire Information for Resource Management System (Firms), which detects active hot spots on the planet’s surface.

In this screenshot, you can clearly see hot spots indicating wildfire locations in northern Portugal and the north-western Spanish provinces of Galicia and Castile and Leon.

Two firefighters were killed in those regions yesterday, one in each country, and Spanish officials say there are battling 23 active fires today.

Wildfires are a common occurrence across southern Europe in the summer, but their severity can be exacerbated by heatwave conditions.

Climate change is causing these conditions to become more frequent, according to research from Spain's state meteorological agency.

As well as overnight strikes on the city of Kharkiv, we’ve been looking into reports of an attack on the city of Odesa in the far south-west of Ukraine.

Regional head Oleh Kiper says a Russian strike has damaged a site belonging to the Azerbaijani oil company Socar.

Images being shared online show firefighters tackling a blaze in an industrial area. The footage was shot at night which makes it difficult to verify.

However, one video shows enough detail - a lattice-work mast near a four-storey building with a sloped roof and one curved corner, across from a silo bearing the Socar name - for us to be certain of the location to the north-west of Odesa.

This also matches with what is being picked up by Nasa’s heat-detection system Firms - its satellites are showing hot spots at the same location.

No deaths or injuries have so far been reported.

  9. Footage shows aftermath of Israeli strike on Yemen power plantpublished at 11:35 British Summer Time 18 August

We’ve verified footage showing the aftermath of an Israeli strike yesterday on the Haziz power plant in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said on X it had targeted “energy infrastructure used by the Houthi terrorist regime” in response to the group continuing to fire missiles towards Israel.

The Houthis have previously said they will not halt such attacks until the war in Gaza ends.

The video shows the remains of a large structure destroyed at the site and firefighters spraying water over the debris.

According to local reports, the strike hit the plant’s central generators with the resulting fire spreading across the site.

We verified the footage by matching the distinctive electricity pylons on the site to those seen on Google Earth.

Damage from earlier strikes is also visible on Google’s satellite imagery from June.

New low-resolution satellite pictures also appear to show the results of yesterday’s strike.

Three previous strikes have been reported at this facility in December and January.

  10. Images show fire, rubble and injured people after attack on Kharkiv blockpublished at 11:00 British Summer Time 18 August

We are currently reviewing photographs and video shared by the Ukrainian State Emergency Services and the regional prosecutor’s office showing severe damage to a residential building in Kharkiv after a Russian attack. At least seven people were killed, according to officials.

The images show smoke and flames coming from the top floor of a five-storey building in Obriy on the eastern outskirts of Kharkiv. An eyewitness, filming at the same location, claims the building was struck at least six times.

Among the photographs of bloodied and injured people being helped from the scene, one shows a firefighter holding the body of a small child. We cannot say, because the picture is blurred, whether this is the child authorities say died in the attack.

We’re seeing reports of further flooding in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region - an area that has already been hit hard by the impact of intense monsoon rains.

More than 100 people are still missing in the province after flash floods killed at least 330 people across Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

We are working to verify the details of a video showing a swollen river.

We’ll check whether it is recent and also cross-reference with local media reports and agency pictures.

Parts of northern India and Pakistan have experienced heavy rainfall and flooding in the past week and we are looking at images and videos to analyse the extent of the damage.

    We’ll bring you updates here.
