The overnight attacks came shortly after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed changes to a US-backed peace plan.

Kyiv and its allies in Europe have been pushing the US to amend the plan, fearing it concedes too much to Russia.

Both the Ukraine and the US have signalled progress in recent days, with Zelensky issuing another optimist message late last night.

He said the plan, which had originally featured 28 items, had been slimmed down and "many of the right elements have been taken into account".

Zelensky wrote on social media: "Now the list of necessary steps to end the war can become doable."

Suggesting further talks with Trump are planned, Zelensky wrote: "Our team has reported on the new draft of steps, and this is indeed the right approach – I will discuss the sensitive issues with President Trump."

US and Ukrainian officials met in Geneva on Sunday to discuss the plan. Russian representatives did not take part in the meeting and dismissed the amendments as "completely unconstructive".

  6. Russia says three killed in Ukrainian strikespublished at 05:42 GMT

Russian officials in the border regions of Krasnodar and Rostov say Ukraine has carried out deadly air strikes overnight.

The Russian defence ministry says it shot down 249 Ukrainian drones.

The acting governor of Rostov region says at least three people were killed. "Tonight's enemy attack brought great grief," Yuri Sliusar writes on Telegram.

In the region's port city of Taganrog, which reported one of the deaths, Mayor Svetlana Kambulova has vowed "necessary response measures".

In the Krasnodar frontier region, Governor Veniamin Kondratyev calls the overnight bombardment "one of the Kyiv regime's most sustained and massive attacks".

The Ukrainian capital Kyiv was hit by Russian missiles and drones overnight, with officials saying at least two residential apartment blocks were hit.

Writing on Telegram, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine says two people died and six were injured.

Tymur Tkachenko, head of the capital's military administration, says one of those were killed when a high-rise residential building was hit in a district on the east bank of the Dnipro River.

The emergency services said a high-rise building was also hit in the Pechersk district in the city centre, and a fire caused damage on three floors before being brought under control.

"We must be cognisant that Russia will not ease its pressure on Ukraine," President Volodymyr Zelensky said earlier, as his air force issued a countrywide missile warning.

  8. More strikes and deaths as talks continue behind the scenespublished at 05:21 GMT

Good morning and welcome to our ongoing coverage of the war in Ukraine.

Both Russia and Ukraine launched strikes overnight, with each side reporting deaths.

The full picture is still emerging but it appears these were significant attacks - we'll bring you all the latest as details are confirmed.

The fighting continues even as talks aimed at ending the war appear to gather pace.

Last night, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed changes his negotiators have secured to a US-backed proposal to end the war.

The original draft of that plan triggered nervousness in Kyiv and around Europe as it was widely viewed as being too favourable to Russia.

However, both the US and Ukraine have signalled talks are progressing. We will be keeping an eye on all the latest developments in these incredibly complex negotiations.
