  2. What can we expect in this Northampton North debate?published at 07:29 British Summer Time 20 June

People living in Northampton North will have a new MP after this election. Last month Conservative Sir Michael Ellis, who has held this seat since 2010, announced he would not be standing.

In 2019 Mr Ellis won a majority of more than 5,500, with Labour coming in second.

Major boundary changes see this seat expanded to the southwest to encompass Northampton town centre and nearby residential areas from the Northampton South constituency.

The new patch includes the Castle and Dallington Spencer wards and King’s Heath.

In terms of issues, like most places, cost of living, healthcare and the cost of childcare are also on some voters’ minds here.

In many places town centre regeneration is an issue but here it’s undergoing a £33m revamp and includes a scheme to transform Market Square, which is due to complete this summer.

This seat is a key target for Labour. They lost it in 2010 to the Conservatives but had held it for 13 years before that. They initially won the seat in the 1997 Labour landslide under Tony Blair.

The party has had recent success in the county, winning the Wellingborough by-election and the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner election.

We’ll find out in two weeks if they can replicate that here.
