  • Two brown bear brothers rescued from a cage near a restaurant in Azerbaijan and brought to the Isle of Wight have finally got to explore their new home.

  • Benji and Balu arrived at Wildheart Animal Sanctuary in Sandown on the Isle of Wight on 4 June.

  • Public donations went towards the almost £218,000 raised for their transport and a brand new enclosure for the pair.

  • The brothers have been kept in a holding pen while they settled on the island and were released on Friday morning into a new 3,500-sq-m space in keeping with their natural environment.

    Lawrence Bates, CEO of the Sandown Wildheart Animal Sanctuary said people will be allowed in later today and will get to see the bears for themselves.

    He said: "It will be an experience like no other. It's a chance to share these bears' new lives.

    "You can see it on their [the bears] faces and body language - their wonderment. It's fantastic.

    If you watch them you can see their ears go forward as the find something new and are like' Oh my god we've gt that as well!'."

    The new, large enclosure has a pond and stream, rocks and platforms for climbing, a variety of trees and some open grass yspace in an attempt to replicate what would be a natural environment for the bears.

    It’s a beautiful sunny day early cloud has cleared and there a brisk wind.

    One of the bears gave the gate a sniff as it opened before venturing into the new pen to explore the new home. The other however has been a lot more hesitant and is still sat in the holding pen, next to the open gate.

    The bears were up early this morning playing together in their holding yard.

    They will be released to the new enclosure this morning. It will be a gradual introduction over a few days and they will be encouraged back to the holding yard with food later.

    We are expecting the bears to be released before 0900 BST. Currenlty they are in a temporary pen before they move into their new home, following their move to the Isle of Wight from Azerbaijan.
