It's the old familiar story of sloppy journalism, because it's so easy to put a label on somebody. They still refer to Sean Connery as 007, and they will do the same with Pierce Brosnan, no matter what else he's done. He was far more famous as Remington Steele in his television series, in terms of viewers. Far more people watched that than will ever watch Goldeneye. But the press will not accept it. As far as they are concerned, that's the label and you'd better conform. I won't conform and I never have. When people ask me what I do, I say I'm an actor. I leave it at that.

They’re more interesting, because there’s a greater variety you can apply: you can be very cruel or charming, amusing or dangerous. But one of the most important things to get over to the audience is that some of these people are doing things they can’t really help. There’s a sadness about them. Anthony Hopkins used to say, “I don’t play villains, I play people,” and it’s a quote I use all the time.
