"Two years ago I wouldn't have imagined doing this," admits Stephen Merchant, on the opening night of The Mentalists at Wyndham's Theatre in London's West End.

Best known for co-writing and directing TV series The Office, Merchant's role as an angry, frustrated middle manager in Richard Bean's dark comedy marks his debut as a stage actor.

Bean has even tweaked his 2002 play to make reference to Merchant's West Country accent.

"I was always intimidated by the thought of learning the lines. Now I've done it I've been tantalized by staying in character - unlike in TV and film where it's a very bitty process," says Merchant.

So is he considering doing more stage work alongside TV, films and stand-up?

"At the moment I'm so tired. It's exhausting. It's basically people on stage shouting. So I won't be able to tell you that until I've finished the run.

"Don't expect my Macbeth anytime soon."
