Sir Tom Jones spoke to BBC News outside the church where Cilla Black's funeral will be held, and recalled his first meeting with the star.

    Quote Message

I worked with Cilla in 1964 - it was her tour [and] I filled in for PJ Proby. Her tour was the first major tour that I was ever on. It's Not Unusual had just come out and it was a fantastic experience.

    Quote Message

We were friends from them on. We sang some duets together and then we would holiday together in Portugal. She was a lovely person. A down-to-earth person. She never put on any airs or graces. She never became a showbiz personality.

    Quote Message

I think she'd want to be remembered as a singer - which she was. She was a hell of a singer.

  11. Cilla funeral - fans pay tributepublished at 10:34

    Fans outside St Mary's Church

Cilla Black was "a beautiful person", according to Liz Jones, who has travelled from Birmingham to be outside the Liverpool church where the star's funeral Mass is being celebrated today.

"Over the years she's always been very special to us," Mrs Jones said. "She's an ordinary person you could identify with."

Her sister Annie added: "I just had to be here. Nothing was going to stop me coming. She was from my era. She was a very ordinary person - you felt she was the same as yourself, but had made good."

Meanwhile, a host of famous names are preparing to say a final farewell to the singer and TV star.

Jennifer Aniston attended the premiere of her new film She's Funny That Way in Los Angeles last night, giving fans their first chance to glimpse her wedding ring.

The actress was making her first public appearance since tying the knot with Justin Theroux in a secret ceremony on 5 August.

Aniston plays a therapist in the film - a screwball comedy about a theatre director (Owen Wilson) who casts a call girl (Imogen Poots) in a new play alongisde his wife (Kathryn Hahn) and her ex-lover (Rhys Ifans).

The Peter Bogdanovich film has received mixed reviews - with the Telegraph calling it an "hysterical" comedy, and the Hollywood Reporter describing it as "strained - though mildly enjoyable".

  13. The Lion Eats Tonightpublished at 10:05

    The Lion Loaf

Last night saw a first on the Great British Bake Off - Paul Jagger received a special commendation for baking a lion. (A lion made of bread, mind you. He's not a barbarian.)

Although it wasn't the mane prize, he got a roar of approval from judge Paul Hollywood, who said the impressive loaf was Simba-ly wonderful.

"That is one of the best things I’ve seen in bread ever," he remarked.

The bake sparked a lot of admiration on Twitter, too.

The episode also scored the highest ratings of the series so far - despite Mary Berry accidentally revealing who was going to be eliminated on Chris Evans' breakfast show yesterday morning.

Episode three drew an average audience of 10.1 million, with a peak of 10.7 million, just as the results were announced at 20:50 BST.

That's enough to propel the show into 2015's most-watched programmes (at around number 21, by our calculation).

Last year, only the grand final broke the 10 million mark...

  15. Len Goodman waltzs away from DWTSpublished at 09:40

    Len Goodman

Ballroom king Len Goodman is quickstepping away from his role as a permanent judge on Dancing with the Stars - the US version of Strictly Come Dancing.

The 71-year-old served as head judge for 20 series of the show, which runs twice a year. ABC said he was leaving to concentrate working on Strictly and spend more time with his family.

Goodman used to travel every week between the UK and US while filming both dancing shows, and has previously spoken about how all the air time takes it toll.

He previously hinted in December he may be leaving the show, but it is the first time ABC has confirmed the move.

Dancing With The Stars' executive producer Rob Wade said:

    Quote Message

Len will not be returning as a judge this season on Dancing With the Stars due to his schedule as a judge on Strictly Come Dancing in the UK and the birth of his new grandson. He still might be involved in the season at some capacity, but we will have to wait and see. We are planning on having great guest judges for some shows to join [judges] Bruno (Tonioli), Carrie Ann (Inaba) and Julianne (Hough), and I’m sure we will see Len in the ballroom again soon.

Rather than appointing a new fourth judge, ABC said the show would feature a host of guest judges, although they have yet to be announced.

The new series on 14 September.

  16. Kelly Clarkson announces pregnancy on stagepublished at 08:58

Pop star Kelly Clarkson has revealed she’s expecting her second child with her husband Brandon Blackstock in the middle of a concert in Los Angeles.

The singer made the surprise announcement after halting a performance of her song Piece By Piece as she choked back tears (the song is both a rebuke to her absent father, and a love letter to her husband.)

"I was not planning on announcing this... I’m totally pregnant. I’m having a really hard time," she said.
