  1. Met Police to be questioned over 'worrying' Coronation arrestspublished at 14:55 British Summer Time 8 May 2023

Met police chiefs will be questioned at City Hall over the arrest of dozens of protesters during the King's coronation.

The chair of the London Assembly's Police and Crime Committee, Caroline Russell, says she found the arrests "worrying" because the rules seemed unclear for protesters "trying to do it by the book".

The Green politician told the Today programme on Radio 4 she was particularly concerned over the arrest of Westminster City Council Night Star volunteers, who help people get home safely.

She said: “It seems absolutely extraordinary that those people who were volunteering -- they were out there handing out flip flops to people who could no longer walk in their high heels because they’d had a bit too much to drink and handing out rape alarms.

"It just seems extraordinary that they got caught up in the Met’s safety net. How? It just feels very odd.”

Ken Marsh, head of the Metropolitan Police Federation representing officers, said the event was policed "impartially" and with "balance".

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has also demanded “clarity” from the force’s leaders on the arrests.

Let's hear more about one of the royal visits earlier today in Berkshire where the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh dropped into a Guide Dogs charity branch near Reading.

Mark Gurney, who was previously a firefighter in London, got involved with the charity after he retired and said the group knew they were having an important visitor but they didn't know exactly who.

"I think it was brilliant, it wasn't expected. It was an amazing surprise."

Mark's dog Holly was on her best behaviour as she and other pups were put through their paces and trying their best to avoid distractions.

"The Guide Dog training programme is really structured.

"I think even Holly sensed we had some VIPs."

In South Wales, meanwhile, Colin and Ceri Guest have volunteered to open the doors of a famous local landmark - so people can visit.

The Pontypool Folly Tower was first built in 1765, before being demolished by the Ministry of Defence during WWII as a precautionary measure.

The folly was later rebuilt and officially opened by the King (then Prince of Wales) in 1994.

The couple explained to the BBC that the building relies on volunteers to stay open.

Over the border from Cheshire to Wales next. A group of people in Powys have come to volunteer at 1st Presteigne Scout Group's hut, which was vandalised last year.

Among the things on the "to do" list were strimming, weeding, sanding and painting the hut.

87-year-old Peter Hood from Pilleth was one of the volunteers. He said: "This is how we should be on the country - everybody helping each other. The country would come to a standstill if it wasn't for volunteers and charities."

Also helping out today is nine-year-old Amelia and her mother Mel. Amelia, a member of the local cub group, said: "I think this is good because it helps the community."

Some of those who braved the wet weather (mentioned by our forecaster Simon King just now) are these residents of Willaston in Cheshire.

They've taken part in a litter pick as part of the Big Help out, local councillor Wayne Salisbury tells us.

"It was great to see so many younger residents playing their part in the community," he says.

Helpers were rewarded with cake and drinks afterwards.

    UK lunch time weather forecast

It has been a very soggy morning so far across many parts of the UK.

While rain is broadly clearing away to the east throughout the afternoon, there will still be some showers around. Some of those heavy, even thundery – especially in Northern Ireland and south-west Scotland, where there’s a yellow warning in force for thunderstorms.

More persistent rain will start spreading into southern England throughout this evening.

Much like the rest of the country, the charity Guide Dogs here in Berkshire is adorned in union jacks and all things red, white and blue.

Today in their pop-up Coronation Cafe, trainee Labrador retrievers were being put through their paces - this time with some royal guests.

I watched as the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh attempted to put branded harnesses on the dogs, with Prince Edward saying: “Sorry, I don’t have any treats”.

His next challenge: how to encourage the puppies to restrain themselves from launching themselves at a union-flagged, cardboard London bus displaying an array of treats.

Prince Edward nervously escorted Sunny encouraging her not to go for the treats - which ended in success.

“Full marks”, one of the trainers declared!

As we mentioned in our last post, the prime minister has joined volunteers at a community centre in Hertfordshire.

Alongside his wife Akshata Murthy, Rishi Sunak has been preparing and serving lunch at a club for the elderly.

They chopped strawberries and parsnips and helped the team prepare today's food.

After helping out in the kitchen, the PM told people: "If the lunch today isn't as good as it normally is, you know whose fault that is".

  11. UK put on a dazzling spectacle - Sunakpublished at 13:16 British Summer Time 8 May 2023

    Rishi Sunak

We've been hearing from Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who says it's been great to join volunteers at community centre in Hertfordshire as part of the nationwide Big Help Out.

Commenting on the weekend's Coronation events, Sunak says "no other country in the world" could have put on such a "dazzling spectacle". The prime minister and his wife hosted an event at Downing Street yesterday, for dignitaries, community figures and youth groups.

He is asked about the arrests of anti-monarchy protesters in London on Saturday. Sunak says the police are independent of government, and that they made the decisions they deemed best. The PM adds that he was grateful to the police for their "hard work".

Sunak's Conservative Party lost more than 1,000 councillors during last week's local elections in England. Asked about the results, the prime minister says it's "always disappointing" to lose hard-working councillors - but insists he will stick to the Tory party's core pledges.

"I think the Coronation's a big event for the British public and it's a time when we should come together and something like this is a way of doing it," said Roberts.

Halfpenny added: "It's important we look after our communities and that's what the Big Help Out is all about."

Volunteers have been planting native wild plug plants in Green Park in central London.

As the Royal Parks website explains, external, the wildflowers are intended as a tribute to Elizabeth II, and will also provide food for insects.

London history buffs might be curious to know that they're being planted in a formation which follows the route of the lost River Tyburn.

“Great, put him to work!” one woman tells me, slightly bemused by who’s making her lunch.

Chopping parsnips may well be a welcome distraction for the PM, after last week’s poor local election results for the Conservatives.
