Shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper says Khalife's arrest is "welcome news", thanking the police and intelligence teams involved.

A key element for counter-terrorism officers on this case now is whether Khalife had any help.

There is a wider question remaining whether someone assisted with this break-out, that officers need to track down and bring into custody as well.

The 21-year-old was a remand prisoner at HMP Wandsworth, accused of crimes and awaiting trial, before he escaped.

He'd already told the court he was going to plead not guilty to the three charges he faces, two of which are for alleged terrorism offences.

  3. How did Khalife escape prison?published at 12:51 British Summer Time 9 September 2023

Khalife was believed to have attached himself to the underside of a food delivery lorry as it left the prison on Wednesday morning.

This map shows the layout of the prison, including the vehicle access road.

    map

Delivery vehicles arriving at HMP Wandsworth first pass through a public deliveries gate, then stop in an "airlock" before a second gate.

This means they are in a secure pen between the outside world and the prison. That is the first location where there can be a thorough security check.

Security teams are trained to search under a vehicle with mirrors and should also check the top of the vehicle and, of course, inside too.

Home Office minister Chris Philp congratulated the police for their "rapid and effective" work.

The policing minister wrote on social media: "Great work by the Met Police. Well done for a rapid and effective piece of work to catch this fugitive.

"An example of policing at its best. Congratulations to all officers involved in this operation."

Sightings allowed police to tighten search netpublished at 12:35 British Summer Time 9 September 2023

    Dominic Casciani
    Home affairs correspondent

There were sightings of Khalife in Chiswick and effectively the Metropolitan Police were able to flood the area with officers.

Once you've got a sighting, you've then got an opportunity to pick out CCTV and live footage coming out of traffic cameras across London.

I suspect a combination of these factors led to the Met rapidly focus their resources on a tighter and tighter area.

Khalife is currently with the police in custody. He has not been returned to Wandsworth prison, or taken to a higher-security facility.

  6. Met Police to give more details 'in due course'published at 12:29 British Summer Time 9 September 2023

The force said in a statement: "We would like to thank the public and media for their support throughout our investigation to locate Khalife, and we will provide a further update on his arrest in due course."

Celebrations in Scotland Yard after arrestpublished at 12:17 British Summer Time 9 September 2023

    Dominic Casciani
    Home affairs correspondent

The champagne corks are metaphorically popping in Scotland Yard.

Because despite the fact Daniel Khalife has been on the run since the middle of the week, after an extraordinary, daring and quite sophisticated breakout from prison, the Metropolitan Police have manged to track him down very rapidly.

Once it became clear there were sightings in Chiswick, the force were able to use all their assets, technology and people on the ground to basically tighten the net over a series of hours.

  9. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak 'very pleased' Khalife arrestedpublished at 12:11 British Summer Time 9 September 2023
    Breaking

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he was "very pleased" Daniel Khalife had been arrested, praising police officers and the public for their efforts in finding him.

"It's good news that we captured the person concerned. As people already know, the justice secretary has initiated an inquiry into the circumstances of his escape and that work will continue.

"And this is obviously very welcome news. And again, my thanks to the police but also to the public for their help."

Daniel Khalife is far from the most famous prisoner to have been inside London’s HMP Wandsworth.

Over the years, the facility has played host to renowned sport stars, entertainers, activists and hardened criminals. Here are some of the most significant:

    • Former Wimbledon champion Boris Becker served eight months at the jail for hiding £2.5m worth of assets and loans to avoid paying debts. He was released in December 2022
    • Oscar Wilde was locked up at Wandsworth in 1895, though he also spent time at Pentonville and Reading prisons
    • Great Train Robber Ronnie Briggs was famous for escaping from Wandsworth in 1965. He died in 2013, aged 84
    • Wikileaks founder Julian Assange was placed in the prison before being moved to HMP Belmarsh
    • Disgraced former pop star and paedophile Gary Glitter served time at the facility. He was recalled to a different prison in March. Fellow disgraced entertainer Rolf Harris also served time at the prison
    • Notorious gangster Ronnie Kray, portrayed by Tom Hardy in the film Legend, served at Wandsworth before being transferred elsewhere
    • One of Britain's most famous prisoners, Charles Bronson, spent time at Wandsworth, but is now in Milton Keynes' HMP Woodhill

    Horatio CastilleImage source, Horatio Castille

A kitchen porter who was mistaken by police for escaped prisoner Daniel Khalife while waiting for a train to London at Banbury station said the experience was "nerve-wracking".

Horatio Castille from Banbury, Oxfordshire, was waiting for a train on Thursday when he was put in handcuffs and told by police that they'd received a phone call from a woman who said he matched the description of Khalife.

Over the next few minutes, about 20 other officers turned up on the platform and his fingerprints were taken - they were cross-checked on the police's database and he was found not to be Khalife.

"I wouldn't say it was scary, but I would say it was kind of nerve-wracking as you can imagine, just randomly being put in cuffs."
