  3. Listen: Uncertain future for successful Rotherham obesity schemepublished at 10:18 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2016

    Amy Nagy

The future of an award-winning scheme in Rotherham which has helped thousands of people to lose weight is in doubt due to Rotherham Council's planned funding cuts.

The Rotherham Institute for Obesity, external (RIO) was set up to address an obesity crisis in the town and to help people avert serious health conditions.

Over the past nine years, 9,000 people in the town have been helped and it's claimed more than 30 tonnes in weight have been lost by people taking part.

Rotherham Council says decisions on RIO's future funding will be taken in March 2017 and they "remain committed to tackling obesity, but cannot guarantee the support will be the same as it is currently".

Dr Matt Capehorn, RIO clinical manager, who's run the service since 2009, says it's saved the NHS more than the cost of running the service.

    Andrew Barton
    BBC Local Live

A West Yorkshire campaign group has expressed concern over budget cuts to services which support victims of domestic abuse.

Although it accounts for 16% of all crime, it's still one of the most under-reported offences, with some victims attacked over 30 times before they call police.

Rick Hamilton, chair of the White Ribbon Campaign, a global movement of men aimed at bringing an end to violence against women, says while support is there the money often isn't.

He says the rise in domestic violence during the Christmas period is shocking:

  11. A River of Steelpublished at 23:51 Greenwich Mean Time 29 December 2016

This is a powerful and immersive story of water, from its wild beginnings across landscape and time to the grinding stones and workshops of Sheffield's traditional blade grinders; master craftsmen called 'little mesters'. Sheffield whose name is derived from the River Sheaf stands at the confluence of five rivers; the Don, Sheaf, Rivelin, Loxley and Porter. The rivers powered the water mills and the grindstones which were used to sharpen steel blades on which Sheffield's reputation was born. The heyday of the cutlery industry was in the 1800s and whilst the future of Sheffield's steel production remains uncertain, the rivers are a powerful reminder of its industrial past and the communities it supported. Kevin Larkin
    BBC Local Live, Sheffield

Police in South Yorkshire are asking people not to call 999 unless it's an emergency.

The force has issued a warning ahead of New Year's Eve saying they often get 999 calls where only music or background noise can be heard.

Officers are also asking for people not to complain about fireworks between 07:00 on New Year's Eve and 01:00 on New Year's Day - as there's nothing they can do.

The force also had calls last year from people complaining that the disco had finished at a Sheffield social club.

Another call was made from a man asking for a lift to Bradford as he had no money.

Officers say these kinds of calls can stop genuine emergency calls from getting through:
