Hospital trusts were also asked about how much they made from parking fines handed out to motorists in their car parks.

Of the 27 trusts which responded, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust topped the list.

They issued fines totalling £78,595 in 2015/16 - and in four years issued fines tottalling £424,585.

Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs Pinderfields and Dewsbury hospitals, issued fines totalling £13,000 in 2015/16 while Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust, in charge of sites in Huddersfield and Halifax, issued fines totalling £12,780 in 2015/16.

The report from the Press Association says hospitals in England collected fees worth more than £120m last year - up by 5%.

Many trusts defended the charges, saying the money was put back into patient care or maintaining car parks.
