    The Co-operative Group is planning to create 1,500 jobs in the new year by opening 100 stores across the country, including some in Yorkshire

    The group will invest £70m in the new shops with the first expected to open in London by the end of March.

    The company is entering the final stretch of a three-year turnaround programme following a period of turmoil mainly involving its banking group.

    A woman has been robbed as she withdrew money from a cashpoint in Halifax.

    The incident happened at about 16:45 on Boxing Day when a woman was taking money from the cash machine outside Asda in Thrum Hall Lane, Pellon.

    A man reached over to try and grab the cash, she struggled with him and the woman was pushed to the floor and the man ran off with the money towards Spring Hall Lane.  

    A man is believed to have chased the suspect from the scene and officers are appealing for him to come forward.

  5. Berlin attack: Lukasz Urban appeal reaches £169,000published at 09:44 Greenwich Mean Time 28 December 2016

    A campaign started by a Yorkshireman to raise money for the family of a lorry driver murdered in an attack on a Berlin Christmas market has raised almost £170,000 in six days.

    The online effort was started by "fellow trucker" Dave Duncan in support of Lukasz Urban's relatives.

    More than 10,000 people have donated to the fund since it was launched last week. Mr Duncan said he had been "overwhelmed" by people's generosity.

    Polish national Mr Urban was found dead in the passenger seat of his lorry after it smashed into Berlin's Breitscheidplatz market on 19 December, killing 12 people.

    A museum badly damaged during flooding a year ago has raised more than £1m towards the cost of restoration work

    York's Jorvik Viking Centre closed on 27 December 2015 after parts of the attraction were submerged beneath up to 3ft (1m) of flood water.

    The York Archaeological Trust, which runs the attraction, said the total cost of restoration was £4.3m with insurers paying out £2.83m.

    The museum is expected to reopen on 8 April.

    A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after another man was found dead.

    The man, who has not been named, was discovered at a house in St Johns Avenue, Scarborough, at 18:25 GMT on Tuesday.

    North Yorkshire Police said he was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

    The arrested man, who is aged 51 and from Scarborough, remains in custody, officers said.

    A 20-year-old man has died after a car crash in Killamarsh near Sheffield.

    At about 22:10 on Boxing Day the man was driving a grey Renault Clio along Station Road when the car hit the kerb and overturned.

    He was taken to hospital but died yesterday. 

    A passenger, a 17-year-old girl, was taken to hospital with minor injuries. She has since been discharged.
