  1. Early gains for Labour in Redditchpublished at 01:12 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Tom Edwards
    Reporter, BBC Hereford & Worcester

Labour have made three early gains in Redditch where there is an overnight count taking place.

The council's currently controlled by the Conservatives. They've had control since 2018.

Despite pushing forward with plans for new council houses and a multi-million pound redevelopment of the town centre, over the last 12 months their majority has been eroded to just four.

To take Redditch, Labour would need seven gains and one hold so we will be keeping a close eye on further results.

We have our first gain of the night in Stoke-on-Trent, where Labour are hoping to win back a number of seats and maybe control of the council.

Finlay Jay Gordon-McCusker has taken the Hollybush ward for them in the last few minutes.

At the Worcester count, the verification of the papers is just about complete and then it will get started there too.

  4. Analysis: Vital question for Tories in Worcesterpublished at 00:28 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    James Pearson
Political reporter, BBC Radio Hereford & Worcester

A bellwether seat in General Elections, Worcester always has more than its fair share of twists and turns when it comes to the City Council too.

Going into tonight no party has overall control. It's a familiar feeling: for the last decade political balance has swung between this and slim majorities for the Conservatives.

To cope with this instability, since 2017 the council's been run by a committee system.

The key question tonight is can the Conservatives remain the largest party.

They're defending seven seats; the talk from canvassing has been of how Labour, Greens and Lib Dems are each targeting taking seats off them.

During the campaign the Tories have hoped to make the much of the fact parking charges at council car parks have been hiked for the first time in 13 years.

  5. Key targets for all the parties in the West Midlandspublished at 00:20 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Elizabeth Glinka
    Political Editor, BBC Midlands

Outside of the big urban authorities the map of West Midlands councils is pretty blue, but the Conservatives are under pressure in these elections, with other parties targeting authorities in traditional swing areas and even some traditional Tory strongholds in Staffordshire, Worcestershire and Warwickshire.

The Liberal Democrats have high hopes in Stratford-upon-Avon, where they need four seats to flip it from the Conservatives. The Lib Dems have mounted a concerted campaign including visits from party leader Ed Davey.

Meanwhile, perhaps in response to the furore surrounding the tax affairs and resignation of local Conservative MP Nadhim Zahawi as Party Chairman, all the Tory candidates in Stratford-upon-Avon (pictured) are running as ‘Local Conservatives’.

Elsewhere Labour have multiple targets across the Midlands, they include Stoke-on-Trent, North Warwickshire, Stafford, Redditch, Tamworth and if they have a very good night perhaps even Tory-stronghold Bromsgrove.

  6. First declaration of the night comes in Stoke-on-Trentpublished at 00:12 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

We have our first declaration from an election in the West Midlands and it's come in Stoke-on-Trent, where all 44 seats were being contested.

Early days though, we are not expecting to know who controls this crucial council just yet:
