  3. Theatrical venues question 'no staged performance' rulepublished at 17:18 British Summer Time 25 June 2020

    The arts community is questioning why theatres will not be able to stage live performances - but can open on 4 July.

    Kevin Roach, runs The Deco, external in Northampton, said being allowed to open but not to stage anything was like "opening a pub without beer".

    Peter Jay, owner of Great Yarmouth's Hippodrome Circus, external, said not being able to open on 4 July had "thrown a spanner in the works".

    "The artists are not singing towards the audience which I think they were afraid of, and they are family groups doing all the acts, so it works well for us," he said.

    A spokesperson for the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) said it was "doing all we can to support the sector through government grants, loans, the furlough scheme and the Arts Council's £160m emergency response package".

    The spokesperson added: "We are working with the sector to get it fully back up and running as soon as possible and considering ways in which we may be able to support it further in addition to this unprecedented financial assistance."

    A dog walker who regularly uses a park has said the amount of litter being discarded is worse since lockdown started.

    Serien Partridge has done a weekly litter-pick at Upton Country Park in Northampton since it opened in 2008, but for the past three months has carried out a daily clean-up.

    She told me that she has found all manor of horrible things, including human excrement, "in the woods where children are playing".

    Jonathan Nunn, leader of Northampton Borough Council, external, said: "We do need to more up here" and that the council would "challenge people" who were making a mess.

  5. Homeless people kept 'safe' during lockdownpublished at 14:13 British Summer Time 25 June 2020

    The number of homeless people given a place to stay by councils during the coronavirus lockdown in Suffolk has reached about 250, with accommodation provided in hotels and bed and breakfasts.

    The government has said it is going to extend funding so longer term secure accommodation can be found for everyone.

    Nick, who has "sofa-surfed" and been sleeping rough, was given a hotel room by Ipswich Borough Council in April.

    He said he had been "safe" and able to talk to family members.

    But he said it had not been the same for everyone as "there are still some here who are leaving and do not have anywhere to go".

  6. Share your views on A428 upgradepublished at 13:32 British Summer Time 25 June 2020

    Views are being sought for a multi-million pound road scheme through Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire.

    Highways England, external has opened a consultation into a new 10-mile (16km) dual carriageway from the Black Cat roundabout at Roxton to the Caxton Gibbet junction.

    The scheme would improve journeys between Milton Keynes and Cambridge, it said.

    Two web chats will take place, on 2 July from 10:00 to 14:00 and on 16 July from 14:00 to 18:00.

    Teams will also be on hand to answer phone calls on 29 June from 13:00 to 18:00 and 13 July from 10:00 to 14:00 on 0800 640 4956.

  7. Parks at risk of being turned into 'rubbish dumps'published at 12:30 British Summer Time 25 June 2020

    Parks are at risk of becoming "rubbish dumps", a council has said.

    A barrier has been installed at Cassiobury car park, and will operate from 07:45 to 22:00, Watford Council said.

    The council is also working with the police to "tackle ASB (anti-social behaviour)" and is looking to increase the number of bins and carry out litter picks.

  13. Met police take over Epping murder investigationpublished at 09:51 British Summer Time 25 June 2020

    The Metropolitan Police has taken over a murder investigation into the death of a man found with stab wounds in Essex.

    The man, believed to be in his 30s, was found injured on Epping Road in Epping at about 20:00 on Tuesday.

    Officers and paramedics treated him for a suspected stab wound at the scene and he was taken to hospital, where he later died.

    Police said inquiries continue into the circumstances and detectives are keeping an open mind as to any motive.

    His next of kin are aware and formal identification is yet to take place.

    A planned reopening of seven libraries across Northamptonshire is going ahead.

    They are: Wellingborough, Irthlingborough, Brackley, Kettering, Weston Favell, Daventry and Oundle.

    The opening times will be Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 10:00 to 16:00 and Saturdays from 10:00 to 14:00.

    Service available include:

    • A signposting inquiry service
    • Access to the internet by booked appointment
    • A select-and-collect lending service by prior arrangement only

    Lizzy Bowen, deputy leader of the council, said: “The phased reopening will ensure that health and safety measures are in place and social distancing guidelines can be adhered to, to protect both our staff and customers."

  15. 'Take care at the beach' warns coastguardpublished at 08:31 British Summer Time 25 June 2020

    As the hot weather is set to continue for the rest of the week, a warning has been given to people who want to visit the beach.

    HM Coastguard Bacton, external, in Norfolk, said it wanted everyone to "enjoy the sunshine" but for people to take "extra care".

    It suggests taking a fully-charged mobile phone, drinking plenty of water, applying suncream and to remember to socially distance "as it's easy to forget when you're having fun".

    "Stay in touch with friends and family while you’re there. Tell each other where you’re going," it said.

    "It’s really important that everyone looks after each other as well as themselves when at the beach.

    "Please don't swim alone, don’t take inflatables into the sea and keep a close eye on friends and family.

    "Not every beach is lifeguarded at the moment."

    Yesterday I had the enormous pleasure of meeting the true gentleman, Sir Captain Tom Moore, who raised more than £32m for the NHS by doing laps of his garden in Marston Moretaine in Bedfordshire.

    Four thousand people sent BBC 3CR pictures for "a selfie salute" to mark his 100th birthday on 30 April, and I was lucky enough to present it to him.
