    Organisers of a festival that celebrates Plough Monday are defending their decision to cancel next year's event.

    The Whittlesey Straw Bear Festival, external attracts crowds to the village near Peterborough each January, but a lack of advice on mass gatherings from the government has led it to call it off, they said.

    Roger Boon, directors of the festival, said: "We spent significant funds running the 2020 festival and money made at that event would normally be progressively spent or pledged to cover infrastructure, performing artists and other costs of staging the next festival.

    "By cancelling now, we can secure festival funding for future years, when we are assured that the event can take place.

    "As a not-for-profit organisation we have limited reserves so we must act prudently."

    The next event is due to go ahead in January 2022.

    Northampton Town Football Club produced a pulsating fightback to overturn a two-goal deficit from the first leg and stun Cheltenham Town to reach the League Two play-off final.

    Seemingly with it all to do after Thursday's 2-0 home defeat, Keith Curle's Cobblers scored three times without reply at the Jonny-Rocks Stadium to clinch a meeting with Exeter City in the behind-closed-doors final at Wembley on 29 June.

    "From minute one we knew what we were going to achieve yday [yesterday], every player who got off that coach believed we could do it. Roll on Wembley, job to be finished."

    Supporter Tom Cliffe said he was "incredibly proud" of the Cobblers.

    MHS Larking Gowen's Covid-19 impact report, external found businesses had experienced the equivalent of "three winters" through the loss of revenue at Easter, and two Bank Holidays.

    Chris Scargill, a partner in the company, said: "Businesses that we surveyed anticipated on average it would take them nearly three and a half years to get them back into a position as to where they were pre-Covid.

    "And that's of course if they survive through to next April when we start to see the normal season starting to ramp up."

    A 450-year-old castle is reopening its gardens and grounds from today.

    Rockingham Castle, external, near Corby in Northamptonshire, will welcome visitors on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10:30 to 16:30.

    All tickets must be pre-booked before arrival, so numbers can be controlled, it said.

    The gardens include a hedgerow planted before the English Cival War.

    The government has said it would be willing to work with Essex County Council on any plan to set up summer camps to help pupils catch up on the teaching they missed out on during lockdown.

    The idea was raised in the Commons by Harlow MP Robert Halfon, who welcomed the £1bn package to help pupils catch up on missed teaching.

    But the Conservative MP - who is also chairman of the Commons Education Committee - wanted assurances that councils would have a say in the way that money was spent.

    Education Secretary Gavin Williamson said the government will look at the idea.

    After its doors were closed on 19 March, another cathedral is preparing to reopen for private prayer.

    Ely Cathedral , externalsaid the initial plans are to let parishioners in from Wednesday to Saturday from 3 July, between 11.00 and 14:00, with Sundays put aside for the clergy to live-stream services.

    Staff will be on hand and to guide worshippers through hand sanitiser stations, social distancing and limits on numbers.

    The cafe, shop, stained glass museum and toilets will be shut.

    The Very Reverend Mark Bonney, Dean of Ely, said: "The preparation for this to be safe is going to be different for every building, and the safety of all is paramount."

    Intu, which owns some of the UK's biggest shopping centres, has appointed administrators as a "contingency" in case financial rescue talks fail.

    In March, the owner of company that runs Lakeside in Essex, Chapelfield in Norwich, and centres in Watford and Milton Keynes, said it was in talks with lenders about new funding.

    Intu had been struggling before coronavirus to fill outlets at some of its sites, and had heavy debts.

    Intu said "notwithstanding the progress made" it had appointed KPMG to plan for administration.

    The firm's financial woes include making a loss of £2bn in 2019, failing earlier this year to raise £1bn in new funding, and having debts of £5bn.

    A doctor who had Covid-19 said it was a "no-brainer" to take part in a study looking into treatments for the disease.

    Dr Wassim Shamsuddin, a consultant anaesthetist at Milton Keynes Hospital, donated convalescent plasma.

    NHS Blood and Transplant said the plasma could be used to treat patients if trials were successful.

    It started requesting blood and plasma from Covid survivors in April.

    Of the donations from men, 43% had high enough levels of antibodies to be used in trials, compared with just 29% of those from women.

    Dr Shamsuddin, 40, from Bicester, said: "I have seen the effects of the virus first-hand and how it has taken the lives of many people, both old and young.

    "When the opportunity came to donate plasma and hopefully antibodies to help others in the fight against Covid-19, it was a no-brainer for me."

    Two arrests have been made after a woman cyclist in her 40s was left in a critical condition after an accident involving a van.

    Suffolk Police, external said the incident happened at about 13:10 on Monday, on the B1077, a mile south of Helmingham near Ipswich.

    She was taken by helicopter to Addenbrooke's Hospital with a head injury.

    The incident involved a white Ford Transit van with a distinctive orange light on the roof which was travelling south towards Ashbocking.

    Police arrested a man and a woman in the van on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and officers are appealing for witnesses or dashcam footage.

    Five people were rescued from Scolt Head Island on the north Norfolk coast yesterday when they were cut off by the rising tide.

    Hunstanton's Coastguard Rescue Team was called out just after 17:00 and found two women and three men marooned on the island, near Brancaster.

    A spokesman said they were picked up by hovercraft and "dropped ashore".

    "We then gave safety advice," he added.
