  4. Sharp increase in bed blockingpublished at 17:40 British Summer Time 13 October 2016

    Monthly figures show delays hospitals experienced discharging patients reached a record high during August of this year.

    In Coventry and Warwickshire hospitals, there were 4,803 days of delays in August 2016, up from 3,496 in the same month last year.

    These delays occur when there are no services available in the community to care for frail patients on release.

    In a statement, Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust said it was continuing to "experience high demand for our accident and emergency services" and working hard to discharge patients as soon as possible".

  5. Police release images following fan violence before Sky Blues matchpublished at 17:37 British Summer Time 13 October 2016

    Five men wanted in connection with disorder before a Coventry City match, have been identified by police.

    They've released CCTV images of the men, external, suspected of being involved in the trouble before a match against Northampton Town on 27 August.

    A 62-year-old man was assaulted and needed hospital treatment near to ROAB Social Club on Foleshill Road in Coventry. 

    A further six men have been arrested and bailed while enquiries are on-going.

  6. Snooker: Chris Wakelin beats Ronnie O'Sullivanpublished at 17:20 British Summer Time 13 October 2016

    Five-time world champion Ronnie O'Sullivan has lost 4-3 to world number 70 Rugby's Chris Wakelin at the English Open.  

    O'Sullivan toiled after going 2-0 ahead in the third round in Manchester.

    Wakelin won the next three, but missed a pink to allow his rival, ranked 61 places higher, to level at 3-3 before holding his nerve in the decider.

    Emails to the University of Warwick criticising plans to award a posthumous degree to Coventry councillor Philip Townshend have been published after a BBC Freedom of Information request.  

    Townshend, who died in October 2015, allegedly took out a mortgage on an elderly woman's house without her knowing before his death in 2015, but police never interviewed him.  

    One complainant said: "To continue with this exceptional honour, whilst such serious allegations are pending, would be wholly inappropriate in these circumstances and bring the good name of the university into serious disrepute."

    The university, which replied to all the complainants, refused to name who made the nomination.  

    University registrar Ken Sloan replied to a complaint saying the university "followed standard procedure" in deciding to make the award.

    The former world champion spent four seasons in charge at Brandon, reaching the Elite League play-offs twice.  

    In a statement on the club's website, Coventry promoter Mick Horton said he wished him all the best for the future.

  10. Serious NSPCC cases jump in wake of Savile scandalpublished at 16:04 British Summer Time 13 October 2016

    The NSPCC says in the past four years, since the Savile scandal unravelled, it has seen a significant rise in the number of contacts serious enough to refer on to the police or to local children's services.  

    In Coventry in 2012-13, it passed on 156 cases. This rose to 261 in 2015-16 - a rise of 57%.

    The charity's figures show:

    • In the same period in the city, referrals after members of the public reported neglect of a child rose from 69 to 101, up 46%
    • Referrals because of physical abuse rose from 36 to 61
    • In the past two years, the helpline has referred six reports of suspected slavery to local authorities

  11. Police officer charged with gross misconduct over alleged theftpublished at 15:45 British Summer Time 13 October 2016

    A police officer is appearing in front of a misconduct panel charged with gross misconduct.

    PC Michelle Felton, based in the Coventry and Solihull areas, allegedly stole fuel while off duty.

    The hearing in Birmingham is scheduled to last two days. 

  12. World Rugby Hall of Fame to open in Novemberpublished at 15:03 British Summer Time 13 October 2016

    A permanent home for World Rugby's Hall of Fame, external will be opened next month in the Warwickshire town where the sport was invented.

    William Webb Ellis is credited with creating the game when he picked the ball up and ran with it at Rugby School almost 200 years ago. 

    Twelve new members will be inducted into the Hall of Fame when it opens on 17 November.

    Severn Trent said water supplies to customers should be unaffected, although some may be experiencing low pressure.
