Two people had to jump from a first floor window after a disposable barbecue, which had been put in a wheelie bin, set fire to their home.

Fire crews from Bradford and Stanningley were called at 22:56 yesterday to the house on Wenborough Lane, Holmewood.

The disposable barbecue had been thrown away before being completely extinguished.

It set fire to the bin, which then engulfed the porch of a nearby building.

The two-storey building was divided into flats.

The two residents in the upstairs flat managed to jump from the first floor living room window and neighbours rescued a person from the bottom floor.

The restored 1980s Ford Transit ambulance is now used to raise money for charity.

Councillors have voted to close a country park to traffic in a bid to stop fly-tipping, anti-social behaviour, and public sex acts, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Horton Bank Country Park, off Great Horton Road, has been plagued by drug-taking, people driving to the site to dump rubbish and engaging in sex acts.

The issue was discussed by members of Bradford Council's Bradford South Area Committee last year.

Councillors agreed the best course of action was to close the park to traffic by installing a permanently locked gate.

Pedestrians would still be able to access the park.

But before they went ahead with the plan, they decided to ask park users what their thoughts were.

Although many of those surveyed agreed with it being closed to traffic, only 11 people responded.

At the latest meeting of the committee last night, members voted unanimously to go ahead with the plan.

A care home has been placed in special measures after residents were found to be left in bed for most of the day and not helped enough at mealtimes.

Riverside Court in Knottingley, West Yorkshire, has been rated inadequate by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) after a visit by inspectors in April.

In the report, the CQC said patients' privacy and dignity were not respected and the food was "mediocre".

A spokesman for the home said it was "disappointed" with the findings.

Staff at a Leeds visitor attraction are celebrating after the safe arrival of 25 newborn baby deer.

The original herd of deer first came to Lotherton Hall, near Aberford, from Huddersfield more than 25 years ago.

Now the council-owned country house has 25 breeding hinds of various ages, the oldest being 17-years-old.

All of them gave birth to fawns who were up on their feet and running around in just three days and now have the run of a 30-acre deer park in the grounds.

Councillor Mohammed Rafique says: "We're delighted to welcome so many fawns to Lotherton this year and we are ecstatic to hear that all 25 newborns are happy and healthy."

The diary of a Leeds man, who was held captive in a German internment camp during World War One, has gone on display for the first time.

Albert Stockwell’s diary is at Leeds City Museum, and is part of a new display looking at the thousands of civilians who were based abroad when war broke out in 1914.

Albert, from Stanningley, was 49, and working in a textiles factory in the town of Wittenberg.

He was forced into the Ruhleben camp at Spandau, Berlin, to prevent him returning home to England.

In his detailed diary he documented the hardships of life in the camp and the bonds forged between its 4,500 internees.

There are descriptions of every aspect of camp life, from daily chores and morale-boosting cricket leagues, to the death of his infant son in England and the suicide attempts of fellow detainees.

Albert was allowed to return home in 1916 due to failing health.

His diary remained with his family until earlier this year when his great grandson donated it to Leeds Museums and Galleries.

Liberal Democrats in Sheffield say they want to know what's happening with suspended Labour MP Jared O'Mara.

The Sheffield Hallam MP was suspended by Labour in October after offensive online comments emerged from his past.

Laura Gordon, who is from the Liberal Democrats, says constituents have a right to know what's happening with their MP.

She says: "The Labour Party needs to come clean and tell people what's happening. If there are good reasons, they should tell us what they are.

"They need to be transparent and start rebuilding that trust with the electorate."

Mr O'Mara's office has been contacted by the BBC for comment.

Bradford's Pride event returns to the city centre this weekend with Gareth Gates topping the bill, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

The free event will be held in Morley Street, between Flares nightclub and the former Walkabout.

It runs from 14:00 to 20:00 and Gareth Gates will be joined on stage by former Atomic Kitten star Kerry Katona, Celebrity Big Brother runner-up Austin Armacost, Shane Nolan, Angie Brown and upcoming artist Allan Jay.

For the past two years the event has been held at Odsal Stadium.

Organisers said they had worked closely with Bradford Council to bring the event back to the city centre.

A man from Barnsley has died in hospital after being stabbed.

Emergency services were called to an address on Braithwaite Street in Mapplewell at about 22:15 yesterday.

The 32-year-old was taken to hospital, but was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

A 31-year-old woman, who was at the house at the time, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
