Moorland blaze: Summary of events so farpublished at 17:55 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2019
Fire crews have extinguished a huge blaze on moorland in West Yorkshire.
The fire, described by one witness as "apocalyptic", started at about 19:30 on Tuesday and covered about 1.5 sq km of land near Marsden.
West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said it was "one of the biggest moorland fires we've ever had to deal with".
Here's what we know about the fire:
- The blaze took hold of about 1.5 sq km of land on Marsden Moor at 19:30 last night
- It came as the UK broke the record for the warmest winter day
- Crews worked throughout the night to bring flames, which were up to two metres high in places, under control at 03:00
- The Duke of York thanked fire crews and police officers for their work, and expressed his sorrow for the moorland which has been destroyed
- West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue service has since issued safety warnings, external and advised residents in the area to stay indoors and keep windows closed
