    A police vehicle was hit several times by a car it was chasing through Alvaston last night.

    The Vauxhall Astra was pursued after officers spotted it being driven erratically in Harvey Road at about 00:30.

    Derbyshire Police said the driver fled on foot after the chase came to an end near Raynesway.

    A 42-year-old who was arrested in Halstock Drive remains in custody after being questioned on suspicion of failing to stop for police, dangerous driving, criminal damage, driving without insurance, driving without a licence, resisting arrest, and affray.

    Councillors have voted in favour of the phased introduction of benefit cuts for disabled people in Nottinghamshire at County Hall.

    The Conservatives and Mansfield Independent voted for the shake-up - which will see some disabled people asked to pay more towards their care - while Labour and Ashfield Independent voted against.

    There were cries of "disgrace" and "you might be disabled one day" from protesters at the meeting as the result of the vote was announced.

    Life on the canal is not just a place of leisure and tourism as Helen Mark finds out that more and more people are now full time residents on the water. For this Open Country Helen chugs along on ‘Ardley Way‘ a 60 foot narrow boat with Pete and Bev Ardley who are full time residents at Foxton Locks in Leicestershire. Will Helen be convinced of this lifestyle? Meanwhile ,Carolyn Watts is taking her lock keepers assessment, will she remember everything she’s been taught and get the narrow boats through Foxton locks and become a qualified lock keeper? A nurse by profession she started volunteering last year as the canals have always have always been part of her families history. Foxton Locks consists of 10 locks all after each other and is the steepest and longest flight staircase of locks on the English canal system explains Alex Goode, the Site Manager whose father worked there too. Every year he and his team are responsible for almost 5000 boats going through the locks. The day ends at Bridge 61 as Helen meets Sarah and Shane Kennedy the newest members of the boating community; they’ve never been on a narrow boat, never holidayed on one but decided to buy and live on one permanently this year. As the depth of winter approaches are they still confident they’ve done the right thing? The producer is Perminder Khatkar.

    Parking restrictions are set to be put in place on a host of streets around Queen's Medical Centre to help deal with a number of problems.

    The Labour-run city council says bad parking is putting pedestrians' safety at risk, blocking access to people in wheelchairs, and stopping people with blue badges being able to park near their destination.

    The proposed Traffic Regulation Order would include the introduction of pay and display bays and new time restrictions.

    It would affect parts of several streets near the hospital, including Derby Road, the footpath between Charnock Avenue and Derby Road, Gregory Street, Leen Gate, Radmarsh Road and Triumph Road.

    If they go ahead, the changes will cost the council about £28,000.

    A protest is taking place outside Nottinghamshire's County Hall this morning against the authority's plans to shake-up how it calculates benefits paid to disabled people.

    Under the plans, some people with disabilities will be asked to make a greater personal contribution to the cost of their care.

    The new animal that could replace the elephants at Twycross Zoo has been revealed in planning documents.

    Rhinos could move in to the empty elephant enclosure some time next year.

    The area was vacated earlier this year when the elephants were moved to Blackpool Zoo to help them breed.

    Zoo bosses had remained tight-lipped about what species would move into the space but notes on a planning application for a new nyala enclosure revealed the rhino plans.

    The zoo says nothing has yet been confirmed.

    A man has been jailed after officers found a stun gun disguised as a smartphone at his house.

    Nottinghamshire Police said the weapon was discovered when they raided Ashton Swanwick's home in Hendon Rise, St Ann's, after his fingerprints and DNA were found on mamba-laced mail intercepted at HMP Lowdham Grange.

    The 25-year-old was jailed for five years after admitting possessing a disguised firearm and three drug offences.

    Paul Cheetham, from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit, said: "Ashton Swanwick hid his illegal activity in plain sight. He sent harmful drugs into prison secreted on writing paper, and he armed himself with a stun gun masquerading as a phone.

    "These seemingly innocuous everyday items in unsuspecting hands could have caused serious injury. The weapon, in particular, posed a real risk and I’m just thankful we were able to remove it without anyone having been hurt."

    A man who threw mamba over a wall to inmates at Nottingham Prison has been jailed, external.

    Police said Donelle McDonald threw 14 grams of mamba and 20 grams of tobacco into the prison in April as part of a plot arranged with an inmate inside.

    However, the package was intercepted by security staff after they spotted it on CCTV.

    McDonald, 35, of Latham Street, Bulwell, pleaded guilty at Nottingham Crown Court to throwing a prohibited item into the prison.

    He was jailed for 18 months after being given a six-month sentence plus a further 12 months for lying to magistrates about a speeding offence.

    Four people have been arrested on suspicion of murder, external after a man died at a house in Sinfin.

    Derbyshire Police said the man was found injured at a property in Lapwing Close at 19:45 yesterday and died at the scene.
