  5. Mayor of Boston's allowance to increase by £2,244published at 16:37 British Summer Time 1 October 2019

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Councillors have agreed to increase the Mayor of Boston’s allowance despite the council needing to save £500,000.

An independent review suggested that those carrying out the historic role should have an increase from £3,366 to £5,610.

During a council meeting some councillors voiced concern about the rise being inappropriate as the authority has to make £500,000 worth of savings in the next year.

But others said the current figure was 'unfair' as it amounted to less than the minimum wage.

  6. Police launch Lincolnshire tyre safety campaignpublished at 15:19 British Summer Time 1 October 2019

Drivers across Lincolnshire are being urged to regularly check the depth of their car tyre treads.

    Tyre depthImage source, Lincolnshire Police

The outer border of a 20p coin measures 1.6mm, the same as the required legal minimum depth of a tyre tread.

Police say they want people to check their tyres at least once a month, especially as driving conditions become more hazardous over the winter.

Officers will be out speaking to motorists over October as part of a national tyre safety campaign, the force says.

Insp Marc Gee says tyres play a critical role in road safety:

    Quote Message

Tread depth is important to maintain good grip on wet roads but, as the tread wears down, the tyres will lose the ability of good grip. Tyre pressure is equally important."

    Insp Marc Gee, Lincolnshire Police

  7. Boston flood warning downgradedpublished at 14:37 British Summer Time 1 October 2019

Flood warnings for Boston have now been downgraded, the Environment Agency (EA) has confirmed.

    River Witham in Boston

About 80 properties in the town had been at risk of flooding due to heavy rain and a tidal surge on the east coast, but officials say the highest water levels have now passed.

However, EA officials say they still have concerns about the high tide tomorrow morning and will be monitoring the situation.

  8. Students unhappy over unfinished Lincoln Uni accommodationpublished at 14:23 British Summer Time 1 October 2019

Students at the University of Lincoln say they are upset they're still unable to move into a new accommodation block following repeated delays.

    Building site in Lincoln

About 250 students were due to move into the new block, known as 179 High Street, at the start of term.

However, it's not clear when work on the development will be finished and they've now been told it won't be ready to move into until next year.

Stephanie Azhar, one of the students due to move in there, says it's been an unsettling time:

    Quote Message

I was a bit scared, anxious, upset a bit. Initially the plan was to move into 179, but it wasn't going to happen anymore...It was only two weeks into uni and I had other things to deal with as well."

Stephanie Azhar, Student, University of Lincoln

A University of Lincoln spokesperson said the company behind the 179 High Street development had recently informed the university it would be "subject to additional delays".

"The university is disappointed our students have been placed in this position. We are interceding on behalf of our students to resolve the issue and to support them," he added.

The woman was assaulted outside the KFC restaurant at the Gallagher Retail Park, in Doncaster Road, Scunthorpe, at about 19:30 on Sunday.

  11. Huge rise in 'handbag' dogs being rescued - RSPCApublished at 11:58

The number of so-called "handbag dogs" being cared for at the RSPCA's rescue centres in Lincolnshire has risen dramatically over the past seven years, new figures show.

There's been a 700% rise in the number of Chihuahuas being taken in, while the number of Dachshunds being cared for is up 600%, Pomeranians by 440% and French bulldogs by 236%.

Overall, the charity rescued 150 dogs from abuse and neglect in Lincolnshire last year and received more than 11,500 calls to its cruelty hotline.

This month, the RSPCA says it wants to raise awareness about adopting a rescue dog, rather than buying a puppy.

A total of 71 dogs were re-homed in the county in 2018.

    Quote Message

Although Staffies, lurchers, Jack Russell terriers and German Shepherds are still the most common dogs coming into our centres, we are seeing a general decrease in their numbers while seeing an increase in the number of fashionable cross-breeds and so-called designer dogs like Dachshunds and French bulldogs arriving in our care."

The firm, which delivers meal kits directly to customers, is set to hire about 400 staff at its distribution centre in Spalding, Lincolnshire.

A further 300 will be hired at its headquarters in London.

Gousto secured a £30m investment two months ago, and plans to expand following a period of rapid sales growth.

  14. False alarms spark new approach to auto fire call-outspublished at 10:38 British Summer Time 1 October 2019

Fire crews across East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire will no longer be called out straight away if automatic alarms go off at businesses during the day, it's been confirmed.

    A Humberside fire engine

Firefighters will now only respond immediately if the alert is backed up by a phone call.

The new policy affects buildings where no-one would be sleeping during the working day, so it will affect premises such as offices and shops.

Hospitals, hotels and residential homes are all exempt from the new policy, the fire service says.

Fire crews are called out to about 1,400 false alarms every year, according to Humberside Fire and Rescue Service.

  15. Red Arrows pilot returns from US for birth of first childpublished at 10:09 British Summer Time 1 October 2019

One of the members of the famous Lincolnshire-based Red Arrows has had to abandon the aerobatic team's prestigious tour of Canada and North America after his wife went into labour.

Flight Lieutenant Damo GreenImage source, RAF

Red 2 Flt Lt Damo Green had to rush home from Canada with just 30 minutes to spare after his wife called to say their first baby was on the way.

As a result, his teammates adapted their display for eight jets, instead of the usual nine.

Red 3 Sqn Ldr Mike Bowden says replacing Flt Lt Green wasn't an option:

    Quote Message

There are only nine display pilots for nine positions and there is no spare you can just throw in there. We can adapt it slightly for flying as an eight but if we were to lose yet another pilot, or we ever lost Red 1 through sickness, then the show wouldn't happen."

Sqn Ldr Mike Bowden, Red 3, Red Arrows

Lincolnshire Police have confirmed they are investigating the incident.

Some flooding is possible in Boston today, according to the Environment Agency.

The town's being monitored following heavy rain and a high tide with a flood warning currently in place.

At Sluice Bridge in Boston, the river isn't looking too high.

But due to recent stormy conditions and the tidal surge moving down the east coast of England, there is some concern.

Boston Borough Council officers are monitoring the situation:

    CCTV screens

The flood warning means flooding is expected.

However, it is worth saying that it's not thought we'll see the overtopping of flood barriers we saw here a few years ago.

Mike Dugher, from the agency, says it's hoped conditions will improve as the week continues.

"We're less concerned as the week goes on, but we will continue to monitor that," he says.

"Things can change, so it's important we stay vigilant."
