Nicholas Burnett left HMP North Sea Camp, near Boston, Lincolnshire, on 16 November as he "wanted to go home".
The 33-year-old was located in Burgh le Marsh hours later and detained by officers, Lincoln Crown Court heard.
Burnett admitted escaping from lawful custody and was given an additional six-month sentence.
Lincolnshire Police have appealed for witnesses to a light aircraft crash which claimed the life of the pilot as investigations continue into the cause of the incident.
The single-seater plane crashed at Mavis Enderby, near Spilsby just after 13:00 GMT on Sunday afternoon and a man was pronounced dead at the scene, the force said.
Three Air Accidents Investigation Branch inspectors are leading the investigation supported by police.
Ch Insp Simon Skelton said currently the cause of the crash is unknown.
Anyone who saw a small aircraft between 10:30 and 13:00 GMT on Sunday has been asked to contact police.

A former magistrates’ court in Grantham will be demolished to make way for a £3.5m care home.
Councillors on South Kesteven District Council approved the plan by Ladhar Crown Care Developments to flatten the courthouse on Harlaxton Road.
A new two-storey, 55-bedroom care home will be built as part of the proposal, as well as 21 car parking spaces.
The former magistrates’ court closed its doors in 2016, with cases moved to be heard in Lincoln and Boston.
The developer has said it expects the new care home will become a large local employer.

A 17-year-old boy who sexually assaulted two women on the same day has been detained for 12 years.
The boy, who cannot be identified, previously admitted raping, assaulting and sexual assaulting a woman who was walking on the South Common (pictured above), in Lincoln, on 21 July.
He also admitted assaulting a second woman with intent to commit a sexual offence.
Passing sentence at Lincoln Crown Court, Judge Steven Coupland described the boy as "dangerous".

Rudies Roots, based in Nettleham, say sales have increased by about 40% from last year.

The pilot of a light aircraft has died in a crash in Lincolnshire.
Emergency crews were called to the crash, near Spilsby, at about 13:20 on Sunday afternoon.
The pilot was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigations by Lincolnshire police and the Air Accident Investigation Branch are being carried out to determine the cause of the crash.
The Lincolnshire force says officers are supporting the pilot's family.
Anyone with information about the crash, or who saw what happened, is being asked to contact police.
