Ian Holloway is Grimsby Town's new manager.
The 56-year-old had been out of management since leaving his role as Queens Park Rangers boss in May 2018.
Holloway succeeds Michael Jolley, who was sacked on 15 November after a seven-game winless run.
"The board believes securing someone of Ian's experience and reputation demonstrates our commitment to bringing success back to Blundell Park," said majority shareholder John Fenty.
"We believe his track record of achieving success at unfashionable, underperforming clubs makes him an attractive long-term appointment."
The Mariners have not won a game in more than three months - a run of 15 games - and have slipped to 21st in League Two, six points above bottom side Stevenage.
Holloway has twice guided teams to promotion to the Premier League, winning the play-offs with Blackpool in 2010 and Crystal Palace in 2013.

Hospitals across Lincolnshire are still seeing an "unprecedented demand" in the number of people attending A&E, with many needing to be admitted to wards, health bosses say.
United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust (ULHT), which runs Lincoln Hospital, Grantham and District Hospital, Boston's Pilgrim Hospital and County Hospital in Louth, says more people are also arriving by ambulance.
This means patients are facing long waits to be admitted to hospital beds, which is causing delays in A&E, the trust adds.
It's asking people to use local pharmacy and GP services before attending the emergency department.
Quote MessageAs a result of this unprecedented demand, our wards are extremely busy and patients are facing waits to be admitted to hospital beds which is causing delays in our A&E. We know that once a person is medically fit to go home, hospital is not the best place for them and so we are working very closely with our partners to get these patients home or to a more suitable place of care as soon as they need it."
Michelle Harris, Deputy director of operations, urgent care, ULHT
