A warning's been issued about a new phone scam which has seen people in Lincolnshire being contacted by fraudsters claiming to be police officers.

    Police

They claim to be a constable or detective from a London-based force and say they're investigating fraudulent activity on people's bank accounts.

They then ask for bank details allegedly to help solve the crime.

The criminals have apparently been targeting numbers in Lincoln and Grantham over the past week.

However, so far no money has been transferred, according to police.

Lincolnshire County Council has applied to Boston Borough Council to install the new sculpture on the River Haven coastal footpath in Fishtoft as part of the programme of celebrations.

The design was chosen following a competition in 2018.

The structure will feature a 5m deck, and will be inscribed with symbols of maritime navigation, constellations.

People can turn the seats to look out at a variety of views and to create shelter from the weather.

An attached “mast” will act similar to a sun dial.

Boston leaders are keen to celebrate the town’s connection with the Pilgrim Fathers – though others debate the strength of the link.

Almost 600 homes were evacuated when the River Steeping burst its banks in Wainfleet, Lincolnshire, last June when two months' worth of rain fell in just two days.

An independent inquiry into the flooding found flood defences were not up to modern standards.

Jean Hart, whose home was badly flooded, said she is worried every time it rains.

"[The floods are] imprinted in my brain like it was yesterday," she said.

"It makes you feel physically sick actually - it's so scary that this could happen again."

Morgan Wray, Environment Agency flood risk manager for the county, said it had carried out routine maintenance and was looking to strengthen the defences and carry out targeted dredging later in the year.

A 33-year-old man suffered minor injuries in the collision, which happened on Charles Street between 13:00 and 14:00 yesterday.

Police believe there may have been other people nearby who may have witnessed the incident and are asking them to get in touch.

  6. Grantham A&E downgrade as Covid-free plan gets go-aheadpublished at 14:41 British Summer Time 11 June 2020

Plans to turn Grantham Hospital into a coronavirus-free site have been approved by Lincolnshire health bosses.

All unplanned admissions will be cancelled and instead routine operations, treatments and cancer care will be taken on for patients from across the county.

However, the move also means the hospital's daytime A&E unit will be temporarily downgraded to a 24/7 Urgent Treatment Centre.

Mark Brassington, deputy chief executive of United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust (ULHT), says the changes won't be permanent:

    Quote Message

Our commitment is that these proposed changes are in place for a time-limited period to respond to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, but also to balance the increasing need to treat our cancer and clinically urgent patients."

  7. Attractions at 'bottom of pile' as virus restrictions easepublished at 14:08 British Summer Time 11 June 2020

Bosses of a Skegness wildlife attraction say the site will remain closed on Monday because they don't have enough time to put in place coronavirus social distancing measures.

Yesterday, the Prime Minister announced that zoos and outdoor attractions can reopen from next week as Covid-19 restrictions are eased.

But bosses at Skegness Natureland Seal Sanctuary say they weren't expecting to be allowed to reopen until next month.

Matt Yeadon, director at Natureland, says he wishes more - and earlier - notice had been given of the move.

    Quote Message

It would have been nice if we had indicators throughout the lockdown. We feel like we've been shunted to the bottom of the pile of priorities...At least we're being recognised and acknowledged that we're struggling."

  8. Second man charged over attempted robberypublished at 12:53 British Summer Time 11 June 2020

A second man has been charged in connection with an attempted robbery at a shop during which staff were threatened with an axe.

Lincolnshire Police say a man walked into the Premier Express Store, in Newmarket, Louth, on 31 May, carrying the weapon and demanded staff hand over money.

However, they said he was challenged by shop workers and left empty handed before leaving the scene with another man in a red Fiat Punto.

The force said a 40-year-old man has been charged with attempted robbery and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

Last week a 44-year-old man was charged with attempted robbery.

Both men are being held in police custody.

  9. Social bubbles 'not a free-for-all' - County health chiefspublished at 11:57 British Summer Time 11 June 2020

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Plans for new "social bubbles" to tackle loneliness during the coronavirus pandemic are a good move but “not a free-for-all”, according to Lincolnshire's health bosses.

    Boris Johnson

Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the move yesterday, allowing two single adult households, including those with children under the age of 19, to act as one.

Under the new rules, the social "bubble" means those taking part can meet indoors, but this only applies to two single adult households and can't be switched between multiple groups.

If one of the people in those “bubbles” gets coronavirus, both must self-isolate and get tested as usual, the new rule stipulates.

Tony McGinty, deputy director of public health at Lincolnshire County Council, says: "This targeted approach to trying to help those people who are really isolated - so living on their own or living on their own with with young children - is a good move.

"I hope people will make sure they understand the rules and follow them, because this isn’t a free for all", he adds.

Police are appealing for help tracing four men who attempted to rob a woman in a Grimsby street last week.

The woman was walking along Stanley Street, close to the entrance to Grant Thorald Park, at about 05:30 on Wednesday 3 June when she saw the men on the other side of the road.

They attempted to call her over but when she ignored them, they came up behind her and assaulted her, before unsuccessfully trying to grab her handbag, police say.

The woman suffered facial injuries and was left shaken by the incident.

The suspects are described as white, over the age of 18, of skinny build and about 5ft 8ins tall.

All wore dark coloured hooded tops with the hoods up.

Anyone who saw what happened, or who has dash camera footage from around the time of the incident, is being asked to get in touch with Humberside Police.

A breezy day with sunny spells and variable cloud.

Through the afternoon, a band of rain will move in from the east, turning rather heavy and persistent at times.

Heavy rain will gradually peter out through the night to leave it largely dry.

But it will remain generally cloudy with the occasional isolated shower during the early hours:

  12. Decision day for coronavirus-free Grantham Hospital planpublished at 09:00 British Summer Time 11 June 2020

A decison could be made later on whether to turn Grantham Hospital into a coronavirus-free site.

    Grantham Hospital A&E

If given the go-ahead, it would mean a temporary end to all emergency admissions to the hospital, with the existing A&E unit there turned into a 24-hour urgent walk-in centre.

United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS trust (ULHT) says if the hospital becomes a Covid-19 free site, removing emergency admissions will be necessary to control the risk of infection.

Most cancer care and elective surgery would then be moved to Grantham Hospital from Lincoln and Boston, according to ULHT.

Two Lincolnshire MPs have expressed concern about the possible impact of the plans.

Grantham and Stamford MP Gareth Davies and Dr Caroline Johnson, MP for Sleaford and North Hykeham, said earlier this week they couldn't understand the need to reduce emergency provision and remove acute beds from the site.
