    The 617 Squadron's mascot, a black Labrador, died on the day of its famous "bouncing bomb" raid on German dams in 1943.

    A memorial at the Dambusters' World War Two base, RAF Scampton, bearing the dog's name was removed.

    The RAF said it did not want to give prominence to an offensive term that went against its ethos.

    Sir Edward Leigh, Conservative MP for Gainsborough, said he was "very fearful of our ability today to erase or re-write history".

    A motorcyclist has died after a collision with a car near Bourne

    The collision, involving a black Honda motorbike and a white Ford Transit, happened on Stamford Road, Toft, at about 11:00.

    Lincolnshire Police said the motorcylist, a man in his 50s from the Ruskington area, died at the scene.

    Police are appealing for any dashcam footage or witnesses to get in touch.

    Two men accused of attempted murder following an incident in Spalding have had the charges against them dropped.

    Anthony Madine, 20, of Cradge Bank, Spalding, and Junior Titilawo, 25, of Aspen Green, Huntingdon, were accused of attempting to kill 24-year-old Liam Heffernan in February. They were also accused of possession of a prohibited firearm.

    Both men had pleaded not guilty to the charges in Apirl and had been due to stand trail in September.

    Howevere, during a hearing at Lincoln Crown Court earlier the prosecution offered no evidence against both men on both charges and not guilty verdicts were formally entered.

  6. Lifesaving equipment vandalised in Cleethorpespublished at 16:02 British Summer Time 16 July 2020

    Three life-saving throw bags have been either stolen or vandalised within days of being installed.

    Nine of the throw bags were installed between North Prom and the Fitties Yacht Club in Cleethorpes on Saturday.

    But, North East Lincolnshire Council say one was vandalised on Sunday and two were stolen on Monday night.

    Cllr Ron Shepherd, portfolio holder for portfolio holder for Safer and Stronger Communities, said: “This emergency equipment has only just been installed and thoughtless acts like this are putting lives at risk."

    The council has asked anyone with information about the incidents to contact police.

    Grantham's Christmas pantomime has been cancelled as a result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

    The production company behind this years festive performance, scheduled to take place in December, said it was a "tough decision" to pull the plug but the health and welfare of all involved was a priority.

    In a statement Polka Dot Pantomimes said: "We believe that you need to experience a pantomime in a packed auditorium with a large audience full of families and friends who can interact with the performers on stage, as well as a company who are able to work in close proximity to one another in the all-singing, all-dancing style that our pantos have become synonymous with - that is the beauty and tradition of pantomime.

    "If we are unable to achieve that this year then we would not be doing the art form justice and would be short-changing our audiences. Therefore, postponing until next year feels like the most sensible, fair and safe option."

    The company said the planned pantomime at Stamford Arts Centre has also been postponed.

    Anyone who has booked a tickets for the show in Grantham will be contacted shortly regarding a refund or transfer of tickets.

    A Lincolnshire MP has questioned plans to make wearing face coverings in shops punishable with a fine of up to £100.

    Wearing a face covering in shops and supermarkets in England is to become mandatory from 24 July.

    Conservative MP for Gainsborough Sir Edward Leigh questioned the decision to enforce their use and the impact it would have on businesses.

    Writing on Twitter, he said, external: "Forcing people to wear face masks isn't the business of Conservatives: We are not an authoritarian party. And don't we want to get people back into the shops? These proposals just don't make sense for Lincolnshire."

    Sir Edward's views have received a mixed reaction on social media.

    One user said, external: "I've always been a Labour voter, but thank God some MPs like you are speaking up for normal, sane people who want to be free to choose. Thank you @EdwardLeighMP"

    Meanwhile, another said, external: "Lincolnshire is fine with masks. Don’t be a dinosaur."

    Robbie Howie said, external: "Let’s just all wear masks for the next month or so in shops, see if it keeps the numbers falling, if there is evidence it doesn’t make any difference then review it. Cant see why people are moaning about it now."

    A moped rider has died in a collision with a car on the A18 in Scunthorpe.

    The crash happened at the junction of the A18 and Brumby Wood Lane at about 18:00 on Wednesday.

    Humberside Police say emergency first aid was provided to the moped rider at the scene but he was pronounced dead a short time later. The driver of the car suffered minor injuries.

    The force has appealed for any witnesses to the collision to make contact.

    Parking facilities at Grantham Railway Station are to be improved.

    The work will see the creation of more than 115 new parking spaces.

    New CCTV will be installed as well as energy efficient LED street lights.

    During the work, which is due to begin later this month, customers are advised to arrive slightly earlier than usual to navigate any traffic management measures in place.

  12. Two killed in separate crashes on Lincolnshire roadspublished at 10:44 British Summer Time 16 July 2020

    Two people have died in separate crashes which happened within about an hour of each other.

    The first collision happened at about 18:20 on Wednesday when a silver Ford Fiesta, a silver Peugeot 208 and a grey Mercedes GLA crashed on on London Road, Burwell.

    Lincolnshire police say several people were injured in the incident and one person died at the scene.

    The force said a man has been arrested in connection with the collisions.

    The second incident happened at about 19:30 when a female motorcyclist, in her 30s, crashed on the A52 near Sedgebrook.

    Offciers have appealed for anyone who witnessed either of the incidents or who may have dashcam footage to come forward.

    A series of drive-in concerts planned for the Lincolnshire Showground have been cancelled after the organisers said the fear of localised lockdowns made it "impossible to continue with confidence".

    Live Nation announced plans last month to host the socially distanced events at 12 venues across the country, with acts including Tony Hadley, The Streets, Sigala and Marc Almond set to perform.

    The 300-car gigs had been designed to provide a safe alternative to the many events that have been cancelled.

    However, in an email sent to ticket holders, organiser Live Nation said: "The latest developments regarding localised lockdowns mean it has become impossible for us to continue with the series with any confidence.

    "We thank everyone for their support and eagerly await a time when we can watch live music together again.

    "Full refunds will be issued directly to all ticket holders within the next seven days."

    Jayne Southall form the Lincolnshire Showground said: "Things are changing all the time with Covid 19 and [the organisers] have to make the decision at the time based on the facts that they have and the decision they have made is that it can't go ahead for public safety reasons."
