    A Norfolk-based charity says a new test to check for Down's syndrome in unborn babies could lead to more pregnancies being terminated.

    It's already possible to test foetuses for Down's, but now a new procedure has been developed which is said to be even more accurate and carries less risk.

    Mark Harrison, of the disability campaign group Equal Lives, external, worries that we're moving to a point where people won't have a choice as the pressure "is always to abort if Down's syndrome is suspected".

    Going down the eugenics route is "very worrying territory... where we're trying to disrupt the diversity of the population and engineer a situation where we won't have any people with Down's syndrome in our society".

    Last night, a Sally Phillips' documentary about Down's syndrome and the ethics of pregnancy was aired on BBC Two.

    Residents of north Norfolk are being invited to a series of drop-in exhibitions, external to share their views on how Norfolk's Vanguard Offshore Wind Farm would look. 

    Located 47km (29 miles) offshore at its nearest point, developers Vattenfall plan to bring power from the 1.8 gigawatt offshore wind farm, external to the shore between Bacton and Eccles-on-Sea. It will then run approximately 50km (31 miles) of transmission cables underground from shore, into the existing National Grid substation near Necton.

    The wind farm would generate enough power every year to meet the equivalent electricity demand of 4% of UK households. 

    The company has identified a wide search area for the cable route. 

    The consultation with local people will seek advice on the best route and potential locations for infrastructure, such as a cable relay station and project substation.

    The developer of one of Norfolk's largest wind farms has revealed early plans for the offshore scheme, including its decision to bury around 50km (31 miles) of onshore transmission cables underground.

    This week Vattenfall, the Swedish company which launched the Norfolk Vanguard Offshore Wind Farm, external in March, is sending newsletters to more than 20,000 people living in north Norfolk, inviting them to information days.

    The company is in the early stages of developing the windfarm proposal. Senior project manager Ruari Lean says they want to hear from as many people as possible, giving them the "opportunity to shape how the offshore windfarm and onshore infrastructure will look". 

    The 1.8 gigawatt Norfolk Vanguard Offshore Wind Farm development would be located more than 47km (29 miles) off the Norfolk coast, and could power more than 1.3m homes.

    Maurice Hammond, the pilot of a vintage aircraft which crashed at Hardwick near Long Stratton at the weekend, has undergone a surgical procedure to strengthen and protect his spinal cord from the neck upwards.

    Mr Hammond, from Eye, was taken to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital following the crash on Sunday, which claimed the life of his passenger.

    Family spokesman Nik Coleman says the procedure was "planned... as part of the overall recovery for him", and Mr Hammond is now in aftercare.

    Posting on his Facebook page, external, Mr Coleman says the "surgery, whilst complex, is a normal procedure in collision cases where the patient was wearing a helmet and has suffered neck tissue and ligament trauma". 

    "It is important to note his spinal cord is wholly unaffected. His CT scans give no reason for concern."

    He continues by saying that the family is encouraged that the medical team considered Maurice strong enough to undergo the procedure, and remain optimistic. 

    Sedation was reduced at one point yesterday for assessment purposes, and "Maurice reacted positively, opened his eyes and demonstrated reflex actions".

    Plans for new trains on the Greater Anglia main line through Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex have moved a step closer.

    The European Investment Bank has agreed a £60m loan to the operator Abellio, external, to try to improve passenger services on the key route into London and other local services.

    The 378 new train carriages will replace the outdated electric and diesel trains currently in use.

    In August, the  company won a nine-year franchise, promising a £1.4bn investment programme.

    Police say they stopped more than 150 people for not wearing a seatbelt during a week-long enforcement campaign in Norfolk and Suffolk.

    Officers carried out checks on motorists and their passengers between 12 and 18 September.

    In total 158 people were found not wearing a seatbelt, 52 in Norfolk and 102 in Suffolk.

    Supt Kris Barnard said: "Not wearing a seatbelt is one of the fatal four behaviours along with speeding, drink-driving and using a mobile phone that makes you more likely to be seriously injured or killed in a collision."

    Seatbelts should be worn, external in any vehicle they are provided in, including buses and goods vehicles.

    Anyone caught not wearing a seatbelt may face a fine, points on their licence or even court action.

  17. Hospital investigates after baby dies of whooping coughpublished at 17:22 British Summer Time 5 October 2016

    A hospital has carried out an investigation after a seven-week old baby died from whooping cough.

    The baby was born at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital in June and was admitted to another local hospital after becoming ill.

    The hospital says it did give the family the appropriate care and advice, adding that it's vital pregnant women are vaccinated as it protects the newborn child.

    Although the number of cases of whooping cough is less than half the number in 2012, the uptake for the vaccination varies widely.

    In Ipswich and East Suffolk 70% of pregnant women had It. In Southend the figure falls to 47%.

    Nationally four children died of the disease last year.

    King's Lynn manager Gary Setchell has given details of defender Matt Castellan's condition after he was knocked out last night.

    The 21-year-old was taken to Hinchingbrooke Hospital and was monitored throughout the night after he suffered a severe head injury.

    The game against St Ives was delayed for nearly 30 minutes while he received treatment.

  19. Telecoms firm TalkTalk gets record fine for poor securitypublished at 17:11 British Summer Time 5 October 2016

    UK telecoms firm TalkTalk has been fined a record £400,000 for poor website security which led to the theft of the personal data of nearly 157,000 customers.

    The cyber attack on its website took place in October last year. The Information Commissioner, external, which imposed the fine, said the firm's security was so poor that the attack succeeded "with ease".

    In nearly 16,000 cases, the attacker was able to steal bank account details.

    Last November a 16-year-old boy from Norwich was among those questionned by police in connection with the alleged data theft from TalkTalk. The criminal investigation is still ongoing.

    A man who killed his colleague with a single punch to the jaw at a work Christmas party where both had been taking cocaine "just panicked", a court has heard.

    Bradley Casey, 21, of Thetford, Norfolk, hit project manager William Wareham, 53, following an argument over taxis outside the Park Inn Hotel in Harlow, Essex, Chelmsford Crown Court was told. 

    Mr Casey said there had been a good atmosphere at the Bupa party until a group decided to get a taxi into town to continue drinking at around midnight on 12 December last year. 

    He said trouble flared when the taxi he ordered had not arrived, and Mr Wareham called him "useless".

    "He got a cigarette, jabbed it in my mouth," said Casey. "I felt threatened. I just panicked and hit him." 

    Mr Casey said he had ash in his mouth following the incident but no burns from the stub. 

    He denies a single count of manslaughter, claiming he was acting in self-defence. The case is continuing.
