  1. 'More boys than girls' excluded from Norfolk schoolspublished at 11:05 British Summer Time 4 October 2016

Norfolk County Council has recently set up a task group, which is looking at the rising numbers and costs of school exclusions.

When a pupil is excluded, they go to a short stay school which has the objectives of giving the child a fresh start.

Roger Smith, chairman of the Children's Services Committee, says any problems the pupil has will be analysed and they will look at the effects of the child's behaviour on others.

But the main reasons to exclude a pupil, says Mr Smith, is persistent disruptive behaviour, followed by assault on either an adult or pupil.  Drug and alcohol problems are "further down the line".

He adds that those most likely to be excluded are aged 15 or 16, with twice as many boys as girls.

Nik Coleman, a spokesman for the family of Maurice Hammond says Mr Hammond remains "sedated to aid his recovery" at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, and his family are encouraged by his progress.

Further tests and assessments will be carried throughout the day "with a view to the best positive actions for his ongoing recovery", adds Mr Coleman.

Nearly 2,000 pupils were excluded from Norfolk primary schools last year.

The figures from the Department for Education (DoE) show badly behaved children were excluded for four days on average.

A DoE spokesperson said: “Every child should be able to learn without disruption – that’s why we’ve given head teachers more powers to tackle poor behaviour.”

  7. 'Alienating' impact of school exclusionpublished at 09:13 British Summer Time 4 October 2016

    Caroline Kingdon
    BBC Local Live

Nearly 2,000 pupils in Norfolk were excluded more than once last year, figures show.

Data from the Department for Education reveal there are just over three exclusions per every 100 pupils in Norfolk.

Alison Ryan, senior policy adviser with the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, warned of the impact of exclusions.

"If you are alienated at school you are more likely to end up not in employment or training and in the justice system at a later stage," she said.

    Caroline Kingdon
    BBC Local Live

That's all from the Norfolk Live team for the day, unless there's any major breaking news.

Our big story today has been the crash of the Mustang aeroplane at Hardwick airfield yesterday. The pilot, Maurice Hammond, was taken to hospital with serious injuries and his passenger died at the scene.

In other news, Norfolk police have made a further witness appeal as officers continue to investigate an incident where a nine-year-old girl was grabbed in a Norwich park... and the detective in charge of the investigation into the attempted abduction of a serviceman at RAF Marham says the inquiry is not linked to the disappearance of a serviceman from RAF Honington.

The team will be back tomorrow at 08:00.

    Have a good evening.

  15. 'Time running out' for devolution dealpublished at 17:54 British Summer Time 3 October 2016

    Andrew Sinclair
    BBC Look East political correspondent

Plans for devolution for Norfolk and Suffolk appear to be in trouble again.

The idea behind devolution is that money and powers will be taken away from Whitehall and given to the two counties. But reaching agreement is proving to be anything but easy - not least because of concerns about having to have an elected mayor.

Map of Cambs, Norfolk and Suffolk

Half of Norfolk's councils voted against the plans in the summer, and now I understand that opposition to the deal is growing on the county council and on King's Lynn & West Norfolk council...  possibly even in Suffolk, which up until now has been solidly behind the plans.

Intensive talks are now taking place. One person told me the thumbscrews are being applied at the highest level.

But time is running out and the next fortnight will be critical.

  16. Watch: CCTV shows burglars raiding a housepublished at 17:52 British Summer Time 3 October 2016

    Do you recognise these men?

Detectives have released this CCTV footage, which shows three men raiding a house in Hethersett, near Wymondham.

It was captured from within the property, at 21:20 on Tuesday, 20 September.

The men obscured their faces while searching the house. One of the offenders stole a golden metal ornament, before all three fled from the scene as the home owner returned.

Det Sgt Pete Wilson, of Norfolk Police, says burglaries like this are rare, but when they do happen they are investigated.

Anyone with information is asked to call Norwich CID on 101.

    Caroline Kingdon
    BBC Local Live

"It's a dance where you've just got to go for it" said Norwich City chairman Ed Balls before he took to the floor for the Charleston in this weekend's Strictly Come Dancing.

And go for it he certainly did. Ed, who'd been bottom of the leaderboard, got a standing ovation from the audience after a dance that, in the words of Tess Daly, was "full throttle".

Head judge Len Goodman said it was "so much fun", although Craig Revel Horwood wasn't such a bundle of joy: "This dance was the wrong side of goofy... it had an air of desperation about it".

Bruno Tonioli said it was a "comeback that Tony Blair would be proud of... you should be proud".

Here's another chance to see Ed and Katya dancing the Charleston, to "The Banjo's Back in Town". Next week it's movie week... Keep dancing, Ed !

The final word goes to Jeremy Vine:

Derek Fulton supports Mr Hammond at charitable events, bringing along military vehicles from that age.

The wrecked aircraft, with investigators removing wreckage

Speaking to the BBC's Kim Riley earlier, he said he was "most upset" to hear about the accident at Hardwick airfield yesterday, which claimed the life of a passenger and seriously injured Mr Hammond.
