    A chilly but bright end to the day with sunny spells across the BBC East region.  

    It will turn a little cloudy from the east during the evening and overnight, but the breeze will keep temperatures a little higher, with lows in the west dropping to 3 or 4C (37-40F).

  4. Big boost for Harleston school library after receiving £400 grant published at 17:33 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2017

    The librarian of a Harleston school says she cried with joy, external when she learned her library would be boosted by a £400 grant for new books.

    Archbishop Sancroft High was awarded the funding by the The Siobhan Dowd Trust, in recognition of the efforts of librarian Sharon Ellis to help struggling readers in the Harleston schools cluster.

    Residents of a south Suffolk village could be forgiven for thinking their eyes are deceiving them..

    As the East Anglian Daily Times has reported, external , half of the word "Slow" is missing from the carriageway on Sands Hill in Boxford.

    UK Power Networks have told us: "Contractors working on behalf of UK Power Networks resurfaced part of the road, including the road markings on the new surface.

    "The remainder of the road markings, ie the remainder of the word "SLOW", were outside the area we were permitted to remedy by the county council."

    A spokesman for Suffolk County Council said: "Regardless of whether we get UK Power Networks to go back and correct that defect, or do it ourselves, we will look to get that sorted."

  6. Police pay tribute to sex crime victim's 'extraordinary bravery' published at 17:16 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2017

    Officers investigating the attempted rape of a 21-year-old woman at Melton railway station have paid tribute to the victim's "extraordinary bravery and courage". 

    The young woman was subjected to the sexual offence in July as she was approached by Sam Duncan, 24, from Alan Road in Ipswich. 

    Duncan has been found guilty at Ipswich Crown Court of attempted rape and exposure.

    British Transport Police's Det Insp Ian Trantum said: "This was a complex investigation as there was very limited CCTV or witnesses in the station vicinity. 

    "However, the victim’s statement was extremely detailed and provided us with a very clear description of the offender. "This was a frightening and extremely upsetting experience for this young lady who demonstrated extraordinary bravery and courage.

    "The victim and the community can be safe in knowing that this predatory and aggressive man is now facing a jail sentence."

    The 46-year-old from Mendham is currently top of the table, with just two more matches of the regular season to go. 

    After missing an earlier round because of injury world number one Michael van Gerwen has two games tonight - against James Wade and fellow Dutchman Raymond van Barneveld.

  8. Health group to discuss proposals for new 'super surgery'published at 16:48 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2017

    Proposals for a "super surgery" housing three GP practices are on the agenda, external for the Ipswich and East Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Group when they meet on Tuesday.

    The new facility, which would be built on the site of the former Tooks Bakery factory on Old Norwich Road in north west Ipswich, would accommodate the surgeries currently at Norwich Road, Deben Road, and Chesterfield Drive.

    The proposal is for the centre to be built by Ipswich Borough Council, who would then lease it to the NHS.

    The council also has plans for 60 affordable homes on the site.

    Leader of the council, David Ellesmere, says: "We need to ensure that as we build new houses in Ipswich, we do put in the community facility.

    "We're really hopeful this new doctors' facility will provide that additional capacity within the NHS for the new development in north Ipswich."

  9. Attempted rapist had history of indecent exposurepublished at 16:34 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2017

    The man found guilty of attempted rape at Melton railway station also had previously admitted exposing himself in 2014. 

    Sam Duncan, 24, from Alan Road in Ipswich, had been undergoing rehabilitation after the two offences.

    He had denied doing the same thing at the unattended station in July last year, jurors heard, and a struggle had ensued with his victim. 

    She had managed to struggle free and pushed the man away. She then boarded the train to Ipswich, and spoke with the guard who called the police. CCTV footage and an e-fit image were released and Duncan was identified and arrested.   

    At court, Duncan was accused of repeated lies and inconsistencies. 

    But he insisted: "Why would I want to make something up? It's not a story, it's the truth. Nothing happened."

    However, jurors found him guilty within two hours, and the judge adjourned for pre-sentence reports and Duncan will be sentenced in April.

  11. Tribute paid to MP who tried to save policeman stabbed in terror attack published at 15:41 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2017

    West Suffolk MP Matt Hancock has paid tribute to one of his fellow MPs, who performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on PC Keith Palmer, who died after he was stabbed by the attacker in yesterday's terror incident in London.

    Mr Hancock said: "Everybody who complains about their politicians, you should look at the behaviour of Tobias Ellwood, a friend and colleague, who rushed to the aid of the policeman. 

    "He's a former army officer and he's obviously got significant training in first aid and he tried to save his life. 

    "There are many people who went above and beyond yesterday and I think we should think about that as well."

  12. Man found guilty of attempted rape at Melton stationpublished at 15:01 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2017

    Ipswich man Sam Duncan has been found guilty of attempted rape at Melton railway station.

    The incident took place as a woman sat waiting for a train at the station at night in July. 

    Duncan, 24, had denied he'd told the victim "you're going to get it tonight", grabbed her head, and that there'd been a struggle.

    Jurors took under two hours to decide that Duncan, from Alan Road, was also guilty of exposure at Ipswich Crown Court.

    Leiston, external manager Glenn Driver's paid tribute to his 40-goal striker Matt Blake (pictured) after he turned down the chance to join big-spending Billericay Town.

    The Essex club, who also play in the Ryman Premier Division, external , recently signed former England international Paul Konchesky, as well as Leiston's Byron Lawrence.

    "He's thought of his career before his pocket," said Driver.

    "You don't hear too much of that in football - players staying because they want to give themselves a chance of playing at the highest level."  

    "I go on record to say how proud I am of him and how proud he should be of himself to put his career before pound notes."

    East Anglia's Children's Hospices, external  is in line for another boost to its funds, with the latest donation of clothing donated by our very own Ed Sheeran.

    The clothing, which includes tops he's been pictured in alongside fellow musician Taylor Swift (who has been spotted in a Suffolk pub with Sheeran), will be auctioned in phases on eBay, external from today until 23 April.

    The most recent auction of Ed's clothing, four months ago, raised more than £8,000 for the charity, which runs hospices in Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk.

  18. Rise in number of recorded child sex offencespublished at 11:28 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2017

    More than 600 child sex offences were recorded in Suffolk last year, according to figures obtained by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) , external .

    That's a 36% increase on the previous year, with police saying they recorded crimes against children that included rape, sexual assault, and sexual exploitation.

    A total of 151 crimes were recorded against children aged 10 and under, while 26 of these crimes were perpetrated against pre-school children.

    Peter Wanless, chief executive of the NSPCC, is calling for increased funding, saying: "Government must commit funds to early intervention that better help these children who through no fault of their own are enduring so much pain.”

    The MP for Suffolk Coastal has praised the response of the emergency services during yesterday's terror attack in London .

    Therese Coffey (Conservative) said: "The police were there straight away. 

    "Obviously this police officer gave up his life defending Parliament, but security did work. 

    "To that end, I want to pay tribute to the police on a wider scale. 

    "The emergency services were excellent in their response and the people I feel the most sorry for in some ways are the tourists and others who were just going about their normal business on Westminster Bridge."

    A spokesman for Ipswich Borough Council, which runs Crown Pools, says the competition pool was closed for about five minutes, and the remaining pools shut for approximately 45 minutes, between 07:00 and 07:45, following an incident involving two men who were reported to be behaving suspiciously.

    A man who was arrested on suspicion of possessing a knife, has been taken to the Police Investigation Centre at Martlesham (pictured) for questioning.
