    Commuter Paul Barker,of Rye, told BBC Sussex how the conductors' strike affected his daily commute to London.

    He said he worked from home on Tuesday but went to Robertsbridge to catch a Southeastern service on Wednesday.

    "You can not take two days off at work but it was standing room only from Frant," he added.

    RMT general secretary Mick Cash says union members are standing firm as the strike over changes to the role of Southern rail conductors enters its final stages.

     "Our guards members on Southern are solid and united on the second day of action and the union welcomes the support from the travelling public as they recognise that this dispute is about defending safety critical jobs and services against the drive for cash-driven cuts that would see those services hacked to ribbons.

    "All of those cuts plans are driven by one factor and that is the over-arching demand from Southern to max up their financial returns."

    Operator Govia Thameslink Railway says there will be no job losses or cuts in salary and the changes will make staff more visible.

    An amended timetable is in place today because of the walk out by conductors.

    Southern rail tweeted, external a picture of their strike route map to remind people to check ahead before travelling. 

    The industrial action is due to end at 11:00 BST but Southern have warned of disruption to services until 18:30 BST.

    Dyan Crowther, chief operating officer of Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR), told Neil Pringle on BBC Sussex she "was very pleased to hear" that the RMT union was going to attend talks aimed at halting the strike action.

    The action by conductors is in protest at the introduction of more driver-only trains and a planned change to their role.

    Mick Cash, of the RMT union, said the dispute was about safety but GTR, which operates Southern rail, said the new system would be perfectly safe.

    We're awaiting official responses from both Southern rail and the RMT union about talks being held on Friday to avert further strike. 

    Conductors walked out at 11:00 BST on Tuesday in a dispute over changes to their role.

    Hundreds of rail services across the South east have been affected by the industrial action.

    Operator Govia Thameslink Railway had urged the union to halt the strike.
