  1. Rick Astley surprises Newcastle barbers

A barber shop in Newcastle, which dons a poster of Rick Astley on its notice board, was surprised by the man himself earlier.

Staff at Patrick Forster Barber & Shop said they had no idea the singer had booked an appointment ahead of his performance at the Utilita Arena later.

The company hangs "funny posters" on their walls to "make people smile", and four weeks ago they decided to place the lyrics to Astley's famous 1987 hit Never Gonna Give you Up to welcome clients.

Owner Patrick Forster said his visit was a complete coincidence, and that Rick Astley was "such a great guy" who found the experience so amusing he "took a selfie to send to his wife".

  2. Passer-by may have prevented sexual assault

A passer-by may have stopped a man sexually assaulting a woman, police believe.

The woman, in her 50s, was confronted by a man who made sexually explicit comments to her on a field in Lennox Walk, Hartlepool, at about 19:00 BST on Friday 29 October.

Cleveland Police said the man, aged in his late-teens or early-20s, tried to grab the woman's arm before a passer-by disturbed him.

He wore a hooded top, which was navy blue with a grey stripe across the chest, and light grey jogging bottoms.

Police are asking anyone who saw anything suspicious to contact them.

  4. Firefighters stop car blaze from spreading

Firefighters have saved about 35 cars from catching fire after a blaze took hold at a garage in Byker, Newcastle.

The fire, which started just after 16:00 GMT on Wednesday at the garage in St Lawrence Road, is thought to have been started by fuel catching light in a workshop.
