Post Office staff locked a man inside the shop during an attempted robbery, police have said.

The man entered the building on Station Road in Hebburn at about 09:30 GMT and threatened workers before he demanded money from the till.

Police said staff were able to lock the suspect inside the store until officers arrived at the scene. Nobody was injured.

Armed officers were called to the scene due to the possibility that the suspect had a weapon, but this was not the case. No hostages were taken.

A 37-year-old man has been arrested.
