  14. Two-thirds of Metro users wearing masks, company sayspublished at 13:45 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2021

Nexus, the company which runs the Tyne and Wear Metro, says about two-thirds of its passengers are wearing face coverings.

It says that is a fall from the height of the pandemic when 90% of its passengers wore masks.

Face coverings are now required in most public indoor venues, such as cinemas, theatres and places of worship.

The government previously reintroduced masks in shops, on public transport and at hubs like railway stations.

Huw Lewis, customer services director, said: "People got out of the habit during the summer when the government relaxed the rules at that point, but the guidance is clear now - if you're in a busy public space, in a shop or using public transport then wearing a face covering is mandatory."
