  9. Residents urged to seek help with TV signal before mast changeoverpublished at 12:00 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2022

Residents who could lose their TV signal this month during a switchover to a new temporary mast have been urged to seek help to re-point their aerials.

Homes in Teesside, County Durham and North Yorkshire have been reliant on an interim transmitter since the Bilsdale mast caught fire in August.

A second temporary mast will be switched on this month while a permanent replacement is built, but some 2,500 homes could be affected by the change.

Operator Arqiva believes half those households – particularly in the Blackhall, Seaham and Sunderland areas – rely on Freeview services and have written to warn them about a potential loss of TV signal.

The company is running a series of events in affected areas this week - starting in Peterlee and Hendon on Tuesday, with others in Hawdon, Easington Colliery, Kelloe, Ryhope, Seaham and Dalton Park - to answer questions from affected residents.

“We will be providing engineers free of charge to help people re-point their aerials,” Arqiva’s head of operational support David John told BBC Radio Tees.

“We are encouraging people to do this before the switch to get the continuity of service. That will mean they will be able to receive TV signal and get a better long-term signal from other Arqiva sites such as Pontop Pike.”

There is also a freephone number – 0800-1214828 – for people who may need help with the switchover.
