  1. Patients waiting more than 10 hours at A&E

    The University Hospital of North Durham is warning of lengthy waits in its A&E department, with some patients taking up to more than 10 hours to be seen.

    Latest figures show patients could be waiting 10 hours and 15 minutes to be seen, while patients face a wait of almost four hours at Darlington's Memorial hospital.

    NHS County Durham and Darlington Trust urged people to only use A&E if they had a life-threatening illness or injury, including:

    • loss of consciousness
    • acute confused state and fits that are not stopping
    • chest pain
    • breathing difficulties
    • severe bleeding that cannot be stopped
    • severe allergic reactions
    • severe burns or scalds
    • stroke
    • major trauma such as a road traffic accident

    The trust said anyone heading to A&E with a minor illness or injury could be facing a lengthy wait and could be sent elsewhere for treatment.
