It feels like there might not be too long left to wait for the last result of the night in Selby and Ainsty, in North Yorkshire.

Some Labour supporters seem to think they’ve done it.

One Conservative figure tells me they reckon they’ve lost, but not by much.

If Labour do win, it’ll be the largest majority (20,137) they’ve ever overturned in a by-election.

Let's take a look at the breakdown of votes in Somerton and Frome too, which the Liberal Democrats have won from the Conservatives by a majority of more than 11,000 votes.

The result in Somerton and Frome shows that progressive parties can use tactical voting to beat Conservative candidates, the winning Lib Dem candidate has said.

Speaking after the declaration of the result, Sarah Dyke thanked Labour and Green voters for "lending" her their votes: "There is no doubt that our electoral system is broken, but you have shown that the Conservatives can still be beaten under it.

"I will work every day to repay your faith and trust in me."

She added that the result was a "historic victory" that showed the Liberal Democrats were "back in the West Country".

More now from the result in Uxbridge and South Ruislip, which Labour had hoped to win from the Conservatives.

Labour lost the by-election in Uxbridge because of the controversial ULEZ policy in the capital, the winning Tory candidate has said.

Speaking after the results of the election were declared, Steve Tuckwell said: "This message from the Uxbridge and South Ruislip residents is clear.

"Sadiq Khan has lost Labour this election, and we know that it was his damaging and costly ULEZ policy which lost them this election."

ULEZ, or Ultra Low Emission Zone, is a scheme under which the most polluting vehicles are charged a fee for driving in certain areas of London.

A recent expansion of the scheme into parts of outer London has faced widespread opposition.

The Lib Dems have won the Somerton and Frome seat, it has just been announced.

The final count was:

• 21,187 for Sarah Dyke of the Lib Dems
• 10,179 for Faye Purbrick of the Conservative Party
• 1,009 for Labour's Neil Guild

This win means the Lib Dems overturned a majority of more than 19,000 that the Tories had when the seat was last contested in 2019.

The seat was held by former Tory MP David Warburton. He had won the seat three times for the party before resigning earlier this year.

We've just been told that the Conservatives have held their seat in Uxbridge and South Ruislip, formerly held by ex-prime minister Boris Johnson.

The final count was 13,965 for Steve Tuckwell, of the Conservative Party, and 13,470 for Labour's Danny Beales.

The result, announced by returning officer Lloyd White, came after a recount.

Sources among the candidates other than Conservative or Labour are suggesting that fewer than 500 votes separated the winner from the runner-up in the provisional count in Uxbridge and South Ruislip.

The speculation here at the Queensmead Sports Centre is that the Tories finished ahead in the provisional count.

A re-count is well underway. As it only involves votes cast for those two parties, a final declaration may not be far off.

We’ve got the turnout for the Selby and Ainsty by-election - it’s 35,866.That’s just under 45% of eligible constituents coming out to vote.That’s one of the higher turnouts for by-elections during this parliament.It was 72% here in the 2019 general election. But fewer people tend to come out to vote in by-elections.We don’t know what kind of impact voters having to bring photo ID has had.

In contrast, the Somerton and Frome turnout was 44.23% and Uxbridge was 46.23%.

We've just heard from polling expert Sir John Curtice, who says the recount in Uxbridge is not surprising given "what we've been hearing from the count".

He tells the BBC it's likely a recount to determine who's in first and second place.

"Irrespective of that, it does suggest Labour here have got much less than the 15% swing in the national polls," Curtice says.

He adds that Sir Keir Starmer's party will be disappointed that this is a "closer by-election than we would've expected".

Lloyd White, the returning officer in Uxbridge and South Ruislip, has just said a recount has been granted in the constituency.

"A recount has been asked for and granted," White told the venue where the count's taking place.

"We'll be recounting all the Labour and Conservative votes - and we will be looking at the other bundles to make sure there are no Labour or Conservative votes in them," he added.

Lloyd White, the returning officer, has put on his tie. He's a respectful man.

It’s a sign that he is about to summon the 17 candidates to give them the provisional result.

If the result is close, the candidate in second place may request a re-count.

If the gap is very narrow between the first and second-placed candidates, a recount would almost certainly be granted.

So we will either get a result in the next half hour - or in the next hour-and-a-half.

Former Justice Secretary Robert Buckland says he's expecting a "very difficult night" for the Conservatives.

The senior Tory tells the BBC "the circumstances of these by-elections are particularly tough for the government" but he doesn't think Prime Minister Rishi Sunak can be blamed for this.

He adds that Sunak has set out "the right priorities for this country" but is facing "severe headwinds", including stubborn inflation.

The by-elections have been triggered by the resignation of three Conservatives MPs - Boris Johnson, Nigel Adams and David Warburton.

Adams's resignation came after he was not included in Johnson's honours list, although he hasn't said this was why he quit.

Warburton stepped down after being accused of drug-taking and sexual misconduct. He admitted taking cocaine but denied sexual harassment.

We've run you through the candidates for the other two constituencies, so here's a reminder of who's on the ticket for Somerton and Frome - the Somerset seat.

The seat had a Conservative majority of more than 19,000 when it was last up for grabs in 2019.

The declaration in Somerton and Frome, the Somerset constituency, is expected much sooner than originally planned.

We're now hearing we'll have a final result shortly after 02:00.

The Conservatives have all but conceded defeat.

David Fothergill, the Conservative group leader on Somerset County Council, blamed a combination of national factors and a former MP, David Warburton, who he said "went rogue". Warburton resigned after admitting taking drugs.

On it, a panel - led by Jo Coburn of Politics Live - is guiding viewers through the build-up as the counts take place. Tory MP Stephen Hammond has been speaking in the last few minutes, admitting that "this is going to be a difficult night" for his party.

He says his party has fought these by-elections "very hard" and insists that he's been "on the ground in Uxbridge" today, where he says there was "no appetite for [Labour leader Sir Keir] Starmer on the doorstep".

Pushed on whether voters were "fed up" with the Conservatives, Hammond says this week has been a good one for PM Rishi Sunak - both in terms of his pledge to stop the boats (after the Illegal Migration Bill passed the House of Lords) and halve inflation (after figures dropped further than expected in June).

The Conservative Party will be thinking of the long game and hoping positive economic news in the future could improve their fortunes, a politics expert has said.

Matthew Flinders, professor of politics at the University of Sheffield, told BBC 5 Live that losing all three by-election seats would be "clearly damaging" for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

"And of course Rishi Sunak has come in in the wake – dare I say, the shadow – of Boris Johnson. Rishi Sunak now has his own five pledges and things are not going quite the way he had hoped.

"The Conservative game is quite simple at the moment. It is to play a long game and push the general election back as far as possible, hoping there will be some economic shift towards a more positive situation."
